Scope Creep vs. Gold Plating

What is difference b/w scope creep and gold plating?

Regards,

Jagjit

Gold plating is adding more 'value' to the product than what is given in the scope statment.

This is done from sellers's side. Completing the project as per the scope is what PMI recommends, nothing

more or less.

Scope creep is yielding to the changes to the changes in scope by the customer.  This indicates ineffectives

of the PM in holding to the scope.

I may be wrong in my interpretation, pls do correct me...

 Hi Kiranu23,

You are correct regarding the definitions for scope creep and gold-plating to some extent. However I would like to extend these definitions:

Gold Plating: Gold plating means adding features that are not included in the product's scope. The impact of the unauthorized addition of the feature can be or bad. It's correct that gold-plating is done by the project team with an intention to enhance the quality of the product, but whether the product quality actually enhances or gets reduced by this gold-plating will never be determined before the product gets to the customer. Remember quality is a measure of the extent to which a product conforms to the customer's requirements, and since you are incorporating the unauthorized change or enhancement, whether this change or enhancement will be acceptable to the customer is subject to his/her inspection. You would have read a number of examples stating that the project team incorporated an unauthorized change ("gold-plating") and that caused customer delight. However the gold-plating has delighted with the change, he/she will not bear the cost of the change. This is a classic example that is referred to in a number of books. However I have recently had an experience that was totally the apposite of this example:

I asked my carpenter to construct a wooden frame for my baby-cot. We agreed on a budget and schedule. When, by the scheduled date, I went back to this carpenter to collect by cot frame, I found out that the cot was polished. The carpenter was actually very confident that I will appreciate his effort as he had performed "gold-plating" for me for free. But this was not the case, I was planning to paint the cot myself and I had some other plans about it. As a result, the carpenter has to remove all the varnish, which cost him more money and effort, and I had to wait for another couple of days to get my cot.

Scope Creep:

Scope creep means "uncontrolled" changes. This can be brought in either by the customer or by the project team. My experience tells me that, for most of the times, this is due to lack of a solid and detailed project scope statement and poor or none change control procedures. If there is a detailed scope statement and a powerful change control procedure in place, most of the scope creep will be handled during its inception.

Thanks for detailed explanation,

Can I safely say that gold plating is technique/process which cause scope creep. Scope creep is general term and gold plating is one of way to cause it.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Jagjit

Thanks Prepcast team for the detailed explaination and correcting some of my misinterpretation.

Jagjth,

We cannot say goldplating as a technique or process first hand.

Secondly, goldplating does not lead to scope creep. As pointed out by Prepcast team, uncontrolled changes

lead to scope creep, whereas goldplating is something which is done without any "changes" to the baseline.

The underlying point is that scope management in scope creep scenarios follow the usual change request

path but these changes were not analysed with respect to the project objectives/charter.

You could still goldplate the work when there is a scope creep in a project.

Hope I am correct and have put forward my opinion....

You are right Kirnu23, It make sense. I got confused with one other question.

Jagjit

When are you going to take the PMP exam??

Gold plating things are heavy expensive and many soft for the handling them with politely and phones are also gold plating. Scope creeping is the silver shield for the borders so writing services uk are dressily to take the plating thing and gold with water wash.
