Please guide me!

Hello ,

I have joined this forum today itself.

I am very much confused and worried regarding my career growth path.

I have around 9 yrs of experience in IT . I have been into support profile throughout these years . I dont have development experience .

And in this field , promotions are very slow and i dont know when will i become a manager and will get project management experience which is nill till now.

Thinking about future makes me feel worried . I can see only dark.

I think i have potential to become a good PM one day ( dont know when in real )

I myself ( on my own expenses ) have attended classroom pmp training 4 months back and i think i can make it . Due to some personal issues i cudnt study .

Now i have time and i think i can restart preparing .

Thanks for bearing with me and reading till this point ( sorry but this was must )

Now confusions :

1) i dont have any pm experience honestly . Should i stop here and dont go for pmp ? Then how will i grow in my career ?

2) does that mean if i dont become a pm and dont have pm eexperience , i cant for pmp ?specially when i think i have calibre to be pmp certified and i love pmbok :-) .

3) should i go for capm instead ? But capm is not that popular and accepted. Then i am not at all convinced spending precious time and hard earned money over it alongwith my 9-9 hectic job .

Please guide me . Having prior pm experience making me feel stuck to go for pmp .

I want to move up on my career ladder and prove my worth . I dont see better career growth prospects in my current work profile otherwise.

Cant it be other way around ? : get pmp ccertification and ask my manager to give me some managerial role and then i will have pm experience .

Please guide me! Much needed !

Thank you so much for your time .

Hi

Many people are in same boat as you

1. you cannot go for PMP as it needs 4500 hrs experience

2. As per PMI eligibility crieteria the answer is NO

3. You can go for CAPM is you think your current employer will give you some value out of that. Meaning consider you for PM positions so you can get pm expeirnece and hence do PMP.

Average age of people in IT is increasing by 3 to 4 years. What others have accomplished in 9 years before will take 12 to 14 years in future.  Just hang on and do good work and promotions will come. If you think about getting to next level only then your work will be impacted.
