Passed PMP Exam on First Try
I was very intimidated by what I'd read online about the exam, but I found it to be easier than I expected.
The Rita Mulcahy book was key for me. I read it three times, which took months because I'm a working mom. I took many free online exams (don't forget to make sure they're based on the current edition of the PMBOK!), and those helped me identify gaps in my knowledge, but they also made me nervous. My actual exam didn't include any obscure terms or concepts like some of the online versions did.
I highly recommend memorizing the knowledge area and process group matrix, and writing it all out in your "knowledge dump" before the exam starts. It only took me an hour to memorize, then I practiced writing it out every evening for a week. I also practiced writing out the formulas that weren't second nature to me, which was a huge help. I was a NERVOUS WRECK the morning of the exam, but writing the matrix and formulas out was almost subconscious, thankfully.
Also, I was really glad to read that others were concerned about all the questions they marked for review at the beginning of the exam. I was so nervous I could hardly comprehend the questions at first. I marked almost all of the first 20 questions for review, but I had plenty of time to go back through them at the end, and they all made sense then.
Just be sure you know what is supposed to happen when in a project, and how to handle changes and risks. Know what is contained in the project charter, project management plan, etc. I highly recommend getting comfortable with creating network diagrams and using the formulas.
I'm excited to say I passed the exam on my first try yesterday, with "Proficient" scores in all areas.
Good luck!
