Passed PMP on March 10th 2015
Submitted by Atmonarman on Wed, 03/11/2015 - 11:24
I passed yesterday, Feb 10th 2015, the PMP exam, on my first try.
I would like to share my experience, in case it is of use to anyone.
PREPARATION and PROFILE
- I spent 125 hours in total to get ready to pass. About 5.5h on average, every working day, along 3 weeks.
- I didn´t do any course to get ready for the exam.
- I only studied the RITA guide, answering about half of the book’s exercises, plus all chapter tests, and re-read only once about half of the chapters. I also read the PMBok in full.
- On top of RITA’s book tests, I did 3 other full tests from “pmstudy.com” (1 free, 2 paid), since I read it is one of the recommendable places.
- Once I got a stable success rate of about 135 correct answers (out of the 200), 75-78% success rate in my case, I decided to go for the exam, even though this website says 150 correct answers is the level for attending the exam “well prepared”.
- I feel my background as Telecommunications Engineer helped me a lot (back in the old times, when I was young and at University, we were used to long exams, where many questions and topics had not been taught during lectures, but you had to find out answers, based on your knowledge). This is similar to some (only some) questions at the exam.
- I have about 5-6 aggregated years of experience, along the last 12, in managing small projects (100.000-200.000 Eur per year).
THE EXAM
- I felt prepared, before going to take the exam. I had a good understanding of all PM areas and processes, as well as experience and roughly good marks on tests.
- My perception is that the questions, in general, were quite easier than the full tests I took (both those from RITA’s book, and those of pmstudy.com). There were obviously some difficult ones, in line with those at preparation tests, but there were also A LOT of simple ones.
- My perception is that there were very few questions requiring mathematical calculations (10-20), compared to previous tests I had taken. Also, I asked, and was provided by the centre, with a physical calculator (the other test takers where using the PC’s calculator), and that made things easier, so consider asking for it.
- However, my nerves got on the way (the short time for a non-English native, self-created pressure to pass, etc), and had a difficult time, taking more time than usual to concentrate and think clearly. Hence, I took 3.5h to answer all questions, and then only had 30 min left, for review. So don´t underestimate the stress of being there taking the exam.
- It is to be pointed out that if you are not a native English speaker, such as myself, it takes more time to re-read difficult questions.
- I only took a short toilet break in between.
- It was key for me to allow myself some time, even before clicking to start the 15 min introductory presentation, to both write down on the paper all formulas and question-answering strategies, and to also get a bit more calmed and confident.
Good luck!
Oscar

Congratulations !!
Oscar - Very nice that you cleared the exam. I am also planning it give the exam in a week or two. Do u think it is work giving the pmpstudy.com exam and how close was the free exam to the paid exam?
How much Input and output questions were there and with what difficulty.
For maths were there any questions on BAC or BTC .. or they were more on network diagram.
Were the questions were very lengthy means very wordy ? How many questions you marked for Review approx.
Once again congratulations.

Hi,
Hi,
I consider that making at least 3 full tests is very necessary, wherever you make them. I used pmstudy.com because I saw it recommended in a similar post to this one from somebody who passed. The free test is as difficult to the paid ones. They are very close.
There where, I guess to remember, very few questions on inputs and outputs. Maybe less than 10, and they where quite easy to guess, having read the RITA guide, and/or using common sense.
Network diagram: only 2-3 questions needing to make calculations. On Earned value management (BAC, ETC, and other concepts) there where quite a few: some 10-15.
The questions where not very lenghty or wordy. RITA says they are, but in this occasion over 90% where just one paragraph. And even the other 10% where and not as wordy as RITA wordy example questions.
I didn´t count how many questions I marked for review, but probably about 40. However, my experience here is not much relevant, since the reason for doubting on many were my nerves, not so much question's difficulty.
Good luck with your exam!

Planning to take in 1-2 weeks
Congratulations Oscar and thanks for sharing your experience.
PP-PMP2014, I am also planning to give in next couple of weeks.
I have answered few free mock tests. I haven't registered for any paid sites and wante d to know if those were more useful than all the free available. Some exam I have tried are
Kim heldman 4th edition
Headfirst 4th edition
bestpmp
examcentral
frank anbari
Oliver 175
techfag360
Can you suggest any other? I think pmstudy has been referred by many.
Also, were there questions on ITTO? I tried memorising them but I keep forgetting many.

Hi,
Hi,
Concerning free tests, I only did two short free tests (one from http://www.oliverlehmann.com/pmp-self-test/75-free-questions.htm#providers_), plus the full free one of pmstudy.com. This later one is exactly as good as the paid ones from the same site.
I didn´t do any more since I read free tests are not so good, and can confuse you. So don´t know about the ones in your list. My perception is that the free ones where not so good, and indeed in some cases could be confusing. For example, the one from oliver lehmann was too difficult, with too many "weird", highly difficult questions, where in other places they are more balanced with "normal-difficulty level" ones, and even easy ones. At the exam, I found even more percentage of easy ones than at tests.
Also the RITA guide recommends not doing too many tests. Personally, it was de-moralising to make some too difficult tests. Also at some point my answer success ratio started going down, so the solution was going back to study, and forgetting about doing more tests. Studying I gained again self confidence. For example, the last three days before the exam I didn´t do, on pourpose, any test, but only studied.
Best,
Oscar

About ITTO: there were only a
About ITTO: there were only a few (4-6) questions on that, and I followed RITA guide's advice: NOT memorising them. Just understand what is logic and what is not, for each process, as per knowing the process. RITA also stated ITTO questions are not many at the exam.
Once there, I had not memorize any ITTO, but applied logic and common sense. But cannot know if I answered them rightly or not, since you don´t get detailed answer results after the exam.
