To study by each knowledge area or by each process group?

Hi all, I just started preparing for the PMP couse and I just started reading the PMBOK.

I notice most reference books, such as the book by Rita, the Headfirst book, etc contains details by each knowledge area, while other book eg, the book by Kim Heldman contains details by each process groups.

Which is a better way to study? Not sure which one is more suitable. Would you give any suggestions or comments? What are the advantages / disadvantages?

MM,

I definitely read PMBOK.

As for my second book, I used Heldman which did focus by process group.  I have also taught the PMP using Rita's book.  I don't think either method is better or worse.  Your reading or studying is affected by more factors than just the book you read (teacher, study group, typing notes, etc.).

I do think you TEST by process group.  Since the PMP test scores you by process group it makes tremendous sense to practice test by process group.  And that's what I did.  I took Initiating practice tests and learned from my mistakes until I could pass an Initiating practice test by over 85%.  Then I moved on to do the same thing for Planning, Executing, M/C, and Closing.

Make sense?  Read and study by knowledge area or process group.  If you study well it's not a factor.

But definitely build competency by doing practice tests by process group.

Thanks for your reply. I'll keep this in mind when I practise those mock exams. I'll definitely read PMBOK, but I will also check out Rita's book and Heldman's book and see which one is more suitable for me.
