study plan for PMP exam

Dear all, After spending few weeks and months in PMZilla, youtube and few other forums, I have decided to go for PMP certification. I have a deadline to pass the exam by end of march 2015.

Application is complete. Payment will be made by 1st of March 2015. (The schedule may change if application is selected for audit). If no audit, check for availability of time slot in last week of March 2015.

Start date 14th Feb.

Read 1 chapter per day (Read and understand) from  PMBOK5/RITA Mulachy/refer youtube videos or free online study material/PMP study groups.

Complete the study by 27th of Feb 2015.

Attend Boot camp from Grey campus on 28th,1st and 7th of March 2015 (includes 2 tests).

Between 1st and 7th March 2015, start 2nd pause of PMBOK5/RITA (with end of chapter tests) and Jeff furman's PMP answer book. Flash cards from Grey campus/Rita's Hot topics

Start simulator tests from 7th March and when score crosses 80% and based of availability of slot in prometric centre, give the PMP exam in the last week of March 2015.

Arranged for handful of test questions (only for tests, not for studying)

Rita mulachy exam simulator, Christopher scordo, Andy crowe, kim Heldman, sean whitaker, oliver henmann and finally purchase pmzilla questions. Already selected and bookmarked youtube videos on some topics for revision. May try hands on Headfirst labs, pmstudy if time permits.

I have 5-7 hrs on weekdays. 10hrs on weekends. Revise my weak areas/formulas/process chart for last 3 days before the exam(No mock tests).

Please let me know if I have missed anything in my plan.

O:

As always, I wish anyone studying for the PMP test the best outcome.

If you were a PMP test prep client of mine, these would be some of my questions.

1)  I can't tell if you have already been studying for the PMP.  Have you done any serious study prior to your February 14 start date?

2)  Why must you pass the PMP at the end of March?  I encourage my students to schedule for the PMP test when they have passed PMP four hour practice tests at greater than 70%.

3)  You are going to read PMBOK 5 and Rita in two weeks?  Based on the people I have met, people I have taught, and my own experience, that seems to be too short a time period.  When I studied to pass the PMP, I gave myself 3 hours per process to read two books (PMBOK and Heldman) and to type my notes.  Three hours per process was difficult yet possible.

I could say more but I don't know the details of your study plan.  I tried to help :)

Best Wishes on Passing the PMP,

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the response and questions.

I cleared my CAPM certification with PMBOK4 and Headfirst in Feb 2013 and regularly visit PMZilla to read LL and other discussions (but not participated actively).

1. I am familiar with PMBOK. My weak areas are Risk and Procurement. I already completed chapters 1-3, Scope and Time in PMBOK5.

2. March deadline is due to company sponsor. I am not underestimating PMP exam, My manager will come back to me by end of next week and if the management agrees, I will get 3 additional months to appear for exam.

3. I work for only 4hrs per day and have an option to work from home. I can spend 4-7 hrs per day ( I tried it for last few weeks). I am going to schedule the exam only when I cover PMBOK5+PMP Prep book and score 80% and above in full simulation test.

The newly added information helps.

As for seeking a 3 month extension from your employer, give them a milestone chart showing your study path.  That might help.

Your study plan looks very good. Put last one month of time in attempting mock tests and make sure you daily do a quick recap of PMBOK. As per my experience taking about 3000 questions will help the best. Take mock tests that are tough in nature like pmzilla, pmpforsure, pmstudy, rita fast track etc.

Good Luck…Pankaj
