Confusion (Weak Matrix vs Functional)

Hi All,

Can anyone explain the difference between weak matrix and functional structure. The PM is coordinator or an expeditor in both structure? what is the difference?

Weak matrix is very close to the functional organization.

 

The PM functionality is the same as Functional Organization.

Some other benifits have the TEAM in matrix organization compare to Functional Organization structure.

 

--- can get the highly skilled personnel they require.

--- resources can be shared between FO depts. and other projects.

--- efficiency of Matrix organizations is higher.

--- Profeessionals can develop their career.

There is a question which confuse me.

Q: The Project Manager acts as a coordinator or expeditor in.

A: Weak Matrix
B: Strong Matrix
C: Functional
D: Projectized

Answer is: Weak Matrix

In Weak Matrix by default the Project Manager acts as a co-ordinator or expeditor.

Whereas in Functional Organization by default the PM has no role at all. Even if he exists,  PM role will be very limited and he has to ask the Functional Manager for his requirements.  We never know whether the PM may have a staff assistant, Coordinator or expeditor role until Functional Manager says.

For this question, the correct answer is the Weak Matrix. In a Functional Organization, PMI uses the term 'expeditor.' The PM isn't even acknowledged.

The role of PM in weak matrix is that of expediter or coordinator. PM might not even exist in functional matrix

In a weak matrix the PM can be either a Coordinator with some decision or a Expeditor with no decision making.
In a Functional Work Environment he is just a Expeditor with no decision making ability.
