Need clarification for Few PMP Questions..pls answer
1. A prime contractor in a customer project under CPFF contract has run into unexpected technical problems. Fixing them will require a lot of additional work to be done.
The company made a decision to book more staff and equipment from their subcontractors in order to adhere to the agreed timeline. The customer agreed to this decision.
What will most likely happen?
A)The contractor‘s indirect costs will increase and the customer‘s payment for them will increase, too.
B)The contractor‘s indirect costs will increase, but the customer‘s payment for them will not increase.
C)The contractor‘s indirect costs will not increase, but the customer‘s payment for them will.
D)Both the contractor's indirect costs and the customer‘s payment for them will not increase.
2. A company has to make a choice between two projects, because the available resources in money and kind are not sufficient to run both at the same time. Each project would take 9 months and would cost $250,000.
The first project is a process optimization which would result in a cost reduction of $120,000 per year. This benefit would be achieved immediately after the end of the project.
The second project would be the development of a new product which could produce the following net profits after the end of the project:
1. year: $ 15,000
2. year: $ 125,000
3. year: $ 220,000
Assumed is a discount rate of 5% per year. Looking at the present values of the benefits of these projects in the first 3 years, what is true?
A)Both projects are equally attractive.
B)The first project is more attractive by app. 7%.
C)The second project is more attractive by app. 5%.
D)The first project is more attractive by app. 3%.
3. In order to speed up a project, you made a decision to fast-track a phase currently performed with five team members, and another one which was planned to begin in four weeks time with another five team members.
Which of the following activities should you do first?
A)Make sure that all exit criteria of the consecutive phase have been met to ensure the flow of communications in a team situation which is more complex by a factor of 2.
B)Make sure that all entry criteria of the previous phase have been met by planning and performing a phase gate meeting to assess technical aptness.
C)Make sure that all exit criteria of the previous phase have been met by planning and performing a phase gate meeting to assess technical performance.
D)Restructure your team and delegate tasks in order to ensure the flow of communications in a team with the number of communication channels increased by a factor of 4.5.
4. You want to perform active risk acceptance. What should you do?
A)Create contingency reserves in resources, money and time.
B)Develop a plan to minimize impact in case that an identified risk occurs.
C)Develop a plan to minimize the probability of occurrence for identified risks.
D)Make additional resources available to speed up the project.

Answers to your four questions
Hi ashu1704!
First of all, post things like this as "plain text" in order to get the necessary space to make it readable ;-)
I have copied your questions and put some space in between to make it easier to read and after each question, there is an answer:
A) The contractor‘s indirect costs will increase and the customer‘s payment for them will increase, too.
B) The contractor‘s indirect costs will increase, but the customer‘s payment for them will not increase.
C) The contractor‘s indirect costs will not increase, but the customer‘s payment for them will.
D) Both the contractor's indirect costs and the customer‘s payment for them will not increase.
Answer: The correct answer is D. Hence they are talking about indirect costs here in the alternative, not direct cost as they are describing in the question.
The second project would be the development of a new product which could produce the following net profits after the end of the project: 1. year: $ 15,000 2. year: $ 125,000 3. year: $ 220,000 Assumed is a discount rate of 5% per year. Looking at the present values of the benefits of these projects in the first 3 years, what is true?
A) Both projects are equally attractive.
B) The first project is more attractive by app. 7%.
C) The second project is more attractive by app. 5%.
D) The first project is more attractive by app. 3%.
Answer: Right answer is A. Use this link for an explanation: http://forums.oreilly.com/topic/1481-more-questions-1/
3. In order to speed up a project, you made a decision to fast-track a phase currently performed with five team members, and another one which was planned to begin in four weeks time with another five team members. Which of the following activities should you do first?
A) Make sure that all exit criteria of the consecutive phase have been met to ensure the flow of communications in a team situation which is more complex by a factor of 2.

C) Make sure that all exit criteria of the previous phase have been met by planning and performing a phase gate meeting to assess technical performance.
D) Restructure your team and delegate tasks in order to ensure the flow of communications in a team with the number of communication channels increased by a factor of 4.5.
Answer: The correct answer is D: Follow this link for an explanation and calculation using the communication formula: http://forums.oreilly.com/topic/1481-more-questions-1/
4. You want to perform active risk acceptance. What should you do?
A) Create contingency reserves in resources, money and time.
B) Develop a plan to minimize impact in case that an identified risk occurs.
C) Develop a plan to minimize the probability of occurrence for identified risks.
D) Make additional resources available to speed up the project.
Answer: The correct answer is A. Contingency reserves are for the "known unknown" and is normally what you do if a risk occurs where ACTIVE risk acceptance was the strategy. Risk acceptance is normally used when you cannot see a way to either mitigate, transfer or avoidance of the risk. Passive risk acceptance normally means you do nothing else than documenting the risk.
Hope this helped! Good luck with your studies! /Anna

Sorry wrong on q# 2
Hello again!
Sorry, typo from my side. To question number 2 the correct answer should be D, meaning the FIRST project is more attractive by 3 %.

Thanks!!
Hi Anna,
Thank you very much for your response and apologies for not putting questions in "plain text" format.
For question 1,the answer would have changed to "A" if option talks about direct cost..right?
Please clarify!!
Thanks & Regards

Yes that is what I believe
Hi again!
Yes, that is how I read that question. The question is referring to DIRECT cost, but the answering alternatives is talking about INDIRECT cost. This is a typical tricky question of that kind you can expect to see on your PMP exam. So make it a habit reading each and every question really careful when you do the test. Just by focusing and reading the questions carefully I think you increase your chances of passing the exam, a lot!

Query on Question No. 3
Hi Anna/Admin,
Most of the time,I am confused with this communication channel formula in deciding value of "n".
Formula for No. of communication channel is n*(n-1)/2 where n = no. of stakeholders.
May I know why PM was not considered along with another team members while doing the calc.
This explanation will surely help me to clear few questions in real exams.
Kindly help!!
Best Regards

Hi Admin,
Hi Admin,
Based on the explanation given by Saket,n should be 6 and 11 consecutively.
I am not bothered about whether the answer has not given the choice which comes with calc of keeping 6 and 11.
I am more concerned what should I consider to answer this.Shall I proceed with understanding given by Saket and consider D option portion as wrong.
If otherwise,Kindly help to explain.
Best Regards

Hi Ashish,
Hi Ashish,
Were you able to eliminate the first 3 answer choices? If yes, that helps a lot in this particular question :)
When I solved this question the first time, I used n = 5 and later 5+5=10. But today as I revisit this, I thought n = 5+1=6 and later 6+5=11.
Looking at it a third time now, it seems that for getting n = 5 and 10, we need to dissect answer choice D - "...flow of communications IN A TEAM...". Meaning that they are refering to communications just within the team (e.g. programmers, researchers) and not the WHOLE project team (incl PM).
It all depends on how well the question is worded. Hopefully the exam questions will be crystal clear. Hope this helps.
Please share any other input you may have.
Regards.

Hi Kinnumann1,
Hi Kinnumann1,
When I read the option first time, first part of A,B,C option doesn't look good to me.I was not able to convince myself for the second part of option D.
As per Rita 7th Edition, term "team" refers to project team and include everyone who does work on project i.e. PM,Project management team and other Project team members.
I also hope that actual exam questions will have crystal clear wording and I can apply Saket's thought to determine value of "n"(as suggested by Admin's link).

Read the question-normally PM would be included
Hi, I agree with Kinnumann. The answer normally lies within the question. From a general perspective, if nothing else is mentioned I would typically always include the Project Manager when calculating the number of communication channels for a project. Let us hope the exam questions are clear enough for you to know what to include./Anna
