My Experience <Passed PMP in first attempt>

 Dear all,

Firstly let me thank you for your suggestions & comments about PMP. This site helped me a lot to understand some of the key information regarding PMP.

Its time for me to share my experience:

I am a B.Tech (Mechanical) guy with 8 yrs experience in Automotive industry.

As a first step, I enrolled in Knowledgewoods consulting. <After my analysis online>

The course was for two weekends <End of May'13>, and it was pretty good.

I like knowledgewoods for the below reasons: <I am not sure if it is same with other consulting companies>

 - The instructer was very good in explaining the key concepts. <In chennai location>

 - The course material was very good. They give many materials <Head first / Mind Maps / Presentation material / All formulae in one sheet> The mind maps book helped a lot for review in last minute. If you are through with this book, I am sure You will pass the exam.

- 10 sets of online examination. The result is in graphical format - Which allows you to identify the strong/weak areas. so that you can focus on the weak areas. <It divides the percentage in Both knowledge area wise & Process group wise>

I took membership in PMI & Paid the exam fee, But there were no exam slots available until september'13.

As you know, PMBOK-4 is in action until July'13. I called up the PMI customer care & They were helpful and arranged a special slot for me <5.00 PM to 9.00 PM> on 25th July'13.

I booked the slot on 15th June'13. so I had exactly one and half month for preparation.

- I started with Headfirst, I read all knowledge areas. one area per two days. <18 Days>

- I read the PMBOK completly once. <3 Days>

- then only MOCK tests --> Review --> Test --> Review --> test

Test 1: 56% - After review i found that i missed many Tools and techniques qs.

---> so reviewd all TT.

Test 2: 62.3% - After review - I got many questions wrong from Risk & Quality. <Mostly scenario based>

----> reviewd Risk & Quality.

Test 3: 65% - After review - Many cost problems were wrong.

---> practiced many cost problems.

Then, I started combined study with a friend, Which helped a lot to exchange ideas. especially on scenario based quesitons.

Test 4: 70% / Test 5: 70% --> My % was constant at 70% to 75% in MOCK tests.

The reviews helped me a lot to improve the weak areas.

Finally the day has come:

I went with fresh mind & started the exam.

I wrote down all the process in a matrix format. also all the formula's. That helps a lot during exam.

There were many questions from cost & time problems <Around 25 qs>. Also Risk, HR & Quality contribute about 70 qs.

I marked some questions (approx. 30) for review. I completed exam with 50 min to spare. Took a brake & reviewd the pending questions. Then got some more time to review first 50 questions.

Finally Submitted the exam to see the result:

- PASS ...(with 5' Moderatly profiecient).

My suggestion is Review the MOCK exams carefully to identify the weak areas. Review each question you marked wrong & find out why it happend. It will help a lot.

I saw many people writing exams several time's without review--> that will not help. Dont write same MOCK exam twice, that will mislead your actual learning.

Review and write different exam to measure your learnings.

Dont panic if there are lengthy complex questions, mark for review and move on...Dont waste your time on them. review at the end if you have time. Dont leave any mathematical problem - they are easy to score. so practice many problems. Concentrate more on Risk & Quality they are tricky areas.

Hope my experience helps someone.

Thank you again,

Regards,

Sriaknth B.tech, PMP
