Appearing for exam post 31st July, that is taking exam on the 5th Edition of PMBOK

Hi All,

I am looking for some advice.

Basically, I was preparing for appearing for exam during the last week of July '13, based on 4th edition . Needless to mention, I couldn’t manage a seat as all were filled up.

Now I have started preparing from the PMBOK 5th edition and have decided to appear by 15th August, 2013. I want to get over this exam ASAP, else I will lose momentum and probably never appear again (I am  ‘P’ when it comes to procrastination).

Most of the guys I know, tried to convince me not to take the new exam so early, for the following reasons, some of them are quite scary. Just wanted to check if these are valid or not...

1. Whenever PMI introduces a new edition, the exams on the first month are unusually tough.

2. All the notes, points, reference material are of the 4th edition, so by mid Aug, its very unlikely that I would get notes related to 5th edition, so I will be at a big big loss.

3. This one- I actually read at one site "in the past PMI has used the first few weeks after introducing a new exam to update its examination reporting processes. This meant that for a short period of time examination results were not available immediately following the examination."

4. I plan to thoroughly study PMBOK 5 and refer to Rita M based on 7th edition (I have) as reference. They say, this is also a bad idea, one should use Rita based on 8th ( I don’t have), even if I am using it as reference.

5. Appear in the month of Sept and Oct, by that time, you would have a fair idea of the question pattern of 5th ed PMBOK. Coming to think of it, I still dont know the question pattern of the 4th ed exam series.

Thanks a lot for your time. Your inputs will be of real help to me, as I would need to take the decision asap.

Best regards,

Bhatta

Depends on how you look at it. there is not much change between 4th and 5th editions, the core concepts remain the same , even if you dont have all the latest books you can still clear the exam,

First month it may not be tough, infact you may clear easily if you read PMBoK and answer some good mock tests. But if you are concerned go for Sept or Oct.
