Stressing over Maths formula - HELP
Hi all
I have already failed the PMP at the end of May and plan to take it again this Friday.
I have just started to stress over the Maths questions that came up in the PMP exam last time where you would get some items of one formula and some items of another formula. If done correcly obviously easy marks.
Does anyone have any tips on how to figure these out quickly? I found I wasted a lot of time trying to figure them out even though having the brain dump of the formula to hand. Bearing in mind that it is literally a min per Q.
Time was my enemy last time so I dont want to fall into the same trap again.
Can anyone help with Maths formula's if there is mixed info?
Thanks
Sharon

Anytime Sharon, You can
Anytime Sharon,
You can contact us on thsi forum, we will definitely help you. Go through the PMBOK defintions once and RAGA355. Make sure you have gone through the PMP material atleast twice and understand the concepts.
Most importantly, the Procurement management and Risk management are very important topics. Plus the Critical path & EV questions practice and practice (variety). So you need not memorize the formulas, they will just on your finger tips.
GOOD LUCK AND ALL THE VERY BEST.

Sharon,First of all,
Sharon,
First of all, GOOD LUCK to you!! I hope that you make it!! Just go in, like you are going to nail it!! :-) A positive attitude does help!!
Instead of trying to see which formula works, I usually re-read the question. Does the question say, the estimate is flawed, does it say CPI is normal, etc??? This is how I determine which formula to use. Is this what you are asking or did I misunderstand you?
I noticed, when I took the exam, I spent time re-reading questions to make sure I am understanding what they are asking!!
Hope this helps!!
Thanks,
Veena, PMP

Great tip thanks
Hi Veena
Actually that is a fantasic tip - and thank you for the good luck wishes. I am hoping I stay a lot calmer than the first time ( I put too much pressure on myself!!)
Say for example I remember one Maths question sticks out in my mind. It was similar to this scenario
It gave me the CV, AC and EV but asked me to calculate the SV - I knew I was missing the PV and wasnt sure how to get to that conclusion based on the information given. Those kind of Questions always throw me.
Hope I am explaining myself correctly :):) In saying that your tip is great I will do that on the day :)
Thanks
Sharon

Sharon,OK, I see. In that
Sharon,
OK, I see. In that case, just make sure you have the formula list in front of you to determine which one to use. Just don't panic, You have already written down all the formulae from your brain dump. During the exam, I had written the formula on the very last page of the booklet that they gave me, so it was easy for me to go back and forth and look at the formulae!!
I was very nervous till the eve of the exam day. Did not sleep well, barely got 2-3 hours of sleep before the exam as I was so stressed out. But, while I was driving to the test center, I said to myself, I will do my best and what ever happens, at least I know I studied as much as I can. Suprisingly, I was not so nervous during the test. And to be honest with you, I think this is what got me through!! Just stay calm!! Most of my questions were very lengthy. I took about 40 minutes to answer first 25 questions!! I knew I needed to catchup. I just said to myself, I can do this and just plowed through it!! I will admit though, once I click on end exam, then my heart was racing while it was calculating the results!! But I was relieved to see - Congratulations... bla, bla.,... I just saw Congratulations!! :-)
Good Luck to you!!
Thanks,
Veena

Don't give up & strategize & plan.
Hi Sharon,
From my perspective , if it takes longer for the calculation question , it would be best to just pick a guess on the answer , marked & press on to the next question without wasting time. Come back to those lengthy ones at the end , so that you don't risk panicking to complete the rest of the easy ones. Lesson learned for my case , though I passed but I knew I could've done better as I have wasted a lot of time on EVM & CPM questions ,which I panicked that I realized I have 15 minutes more to go with 30 questions left at the end , hence blind firing at them.
Not too sure if everyone's exam is similar to mine , my set of questions were really tough the 1st 100s & the remaining 100s were really short (straight forward 1 sentence) & easy. For me time was my biggest enemy , if I could do it again , I would pick an answer on all the EVM & CPM questions , marked & press forward , take a 5 minutes break & come back to them with a more relax mind. Not worth sacrificing the easy ones for the hard ones.
