Just Failed PMP again and now fully disgusted and depressed.

I failed the PMP again 6-11-12 with 4 Moderately Proficient and 1 Below Proficient. Last year I failed with 4 BP and 2 MP's, Ok last time I even felt I might now been prepared. This time, I took months to prepare. I used Head First Books, Rita's seventh, Fast Track, and Larry Hawkins PMP exam simulator, tech360 exam and many others. I read the books over and over and was getting in the seventies and occasionally higher on all simulation exams.Needless to say i am depressed and don't know what to do know. Can I really pass? My memory has never been that great ever. Should I try one of these exam prep courses? How do you know which one is good? Some are close to 2K. I almost need this credential just to stay employed but, I don't want to fail again. This round took a lot out of me. I feel extra stupid because I changed a few answers I marked before ending the test. Anyway, I'm just venting, any suggestions or kind words will be greatly appreciated.

Nivla

Isn't it surprising that PMI failed you with 4 MPs and 1 BP where as I just saw a thread TODAY where  he/she had passed with the same set of scores, 4MPs and 1 BP.

What is this? I feel may be it was your second  attempt so they might have raised the bar compared to the other case since it was 1st for him/her.

How good are you with ITTOs? May be have a strong command over it with logic. Do good tests like PMPforsure, Brainbok, PMStudy et al. I am not a PMP. Even I failed in my 1st attempt with 3BPs, 2 MPs and 1P in Ethics. Hence, the already certified gentlemen/lady will tell you better which tests to go for.

However, your results are indeed disheartening for 2nd timers like me. So near and yet so far.

God bless me/us from PMI.

Thanks,

KK....

You failed PMP with just 1BP, how come? I have not seen a single case where any of my students have failed PMP with 1BP after 31-Aug-2011 exam changes. The very first thing is that send an email request for re-consideration of your PMP result to certappeals@pmi.org. Make sure you mention your PMI member number.

I have been noticing many PMP failures since 2 months and some of my good students are failing. People are failing even after securing very good in mock test and by reading best references like Rita/Headfirst/Andy. You are a similar victim.

Not sure if PMI has made some changes in evaluation. The big issue is that, they have not documented anywhere the exact passing criteria after 31-Aug-2011 changes.

Kranti, has already suggested some good tips, check if that helps. Don’t get disheartened, for paid certification exam, there is always tomorrow.

Saket_pmp, thank you for your kind words. I did take your advise and e-mailed PMI about my results. I'll let the group know what happened. I didnt even know they had this department so I really appreciate it. Do you know of anyone that was actually successful at this?

Thanks again, Nivla

Yes, but very small percentage. Out of 600-700 people I know in last 5 years, 2 did pass PMP with PMI certificate Appeal Authority.

Keep your finger crossed; there is no harm in trying before giving up!

Hello Nivla,

I am really sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. The same thing happened to me last year when I attempted it the third time. I was really confused when I got the same results. 2 P, 3MP and 1 BPand guess after my third try I had to wait for a whole year to re-apply and write this exam  So you can imagine how I felt. Anyway don't give up because you will make it on your next attempt. I am currently studying again and will write this exam and pass with flying colors.

So please stay positive and everything will be fine.

Cheers,

E

Thanks E for your kind words, I still am realing as I put so much energy in this.

Thanks again, Nivla

 Hi

Sorry to hear that but dont loose the heart though its a natural feeling.Probably you might have failed on boundry. Nevertheless I know, its like swallowing the bullet but lets now look forward for what next,

Next Steps, take a break / vacation it will help you get mind clear, calm and rejuvenates it.

Since you have already gone through the prep process, and familiar with entire process so I dont see a reason why you can not oass the exam.

Action Plan -

1. Do retrospection. Write down on a paper what areas you find hard to understand. Areas where you scored less in 2nd attempt.
2. Once you identify those areas, drill down further to identify topics, concepts which were not clearly understood
3.  Start reading areas, topics from Rita and  PMBOK which are identified in #1-2. Highlight key points / concepts in book with highlighter and put flags where necessary
4. Do solve all excercises from Rita. Its must for you. It will help to reinforce the concepts what you have just read.
5.  If you have PMFastrack take Knowledge Area wise exams and then process group. Otherwise switch to online resources like pmzilla, etc
6. Revisit ITTO's everyday and develope a good handle on it.
7. Take full mock exam. There are many available online, pmzilla, PMFastrack, plenty of sources
8.  Review questions which you didnt get right in the mock exam. Do one quick round of power reading, visit important points marked in [#3]
9. Take next full mock exam.
10. Review questions which you didnt get right. Analyse whether your score is getting better than previous attempt. Ensure you doesnt repeat the same mistakes. Visit ITTO's, formulae for EVM, etc.
11, Repeat steps 7-10 until you feel prepared. Hope this will give you necessary confidence.

I would advice keeping a target score of minimum 85% for mock exams.

Keep us posted how it goes

All The Best!!!

Hello Makarand, I really apreciate the advice and I will look over your blog carefully, you took a different approach than I and at a glance it looks to be more structured than my study routine.Do you have an opinion on these Boot Camps for PMP?

Thanks again Nivla

Thanks Nivla,

Personally  I am in favor of PMP boot camp, but before you join as mentioned in my previous reply I would advice to complete the retrospection and identify the weak areas. It will help you to derive more value from boot camp by putting extra attention to weak areas with the help of trainer.

Probably before joining the camp set the ground rules. Talk to trainer 1-1 and explain your specific requirements, past PMP exam results and share your analysis. Keep the target of scoring 80%+ in all exercises and mock exams during the boot camp.

Makarandh, thanks for much for answering my question on Boot Camps. I will time a little time to reassess and take your advice. Thanks to all of you on here, I dont feel like a lost cause anymore and will tackle this thing.

Thanks again Nivla

Hello Nivla,

I can imagine your frustration, but do not give up!

If you have appeared twice and havent been able to pass, then there must be severe understanding gaps related to the concepts.

Memorising theory from various books, ITTO's etc wont help till your basics are strong. My advice to you would be to understand the PMI way of handling projects.

1. Understand why you got the questions wrong on simulation tests. Can you relate to the reasoning of the answer. If not, then consult forums.

2. Do not rush your preparation. Take time in understanding stuff the right way.

3. Do questions from PMStudy, Simplilearn, PMZilla, and go through all the reasonings for both right & wrong questions in Rita Fast track.

4. If you're weak on the numerical / formula side, consult the book ' Mathematics for PMP' as it has all calculation based qs in one place. That can really boost your understanding, confidence and clear many concepts.

To get my foundation right i started with PMChamp's online session. It really helped me.

Lastly, dont give up friend :) You can and will pass inshallah.

Tameem Qazi, thanks so much for your kind words and advice. I will purchase the math book as it is a good over-all reference. I am going to re-assess and restart.

Thanks again

Nivla,

I am sorry to hear of your difficulty in passing the PMP exam.  What the others have given you here is good study advice, however I would like to offer one other perspective that may help you as well.

Passing the PMP exam (which I just did myself a few days ago) involves integrating three aspects of what you learned:

1.  Knowledge and understanding of the material and formulas - This is really memorization of the material.  Things like the inputs, outputs, tools, techniques, and math formulas.  In order to pass this aspect you simply regurgitate what you memorized.  The questions are typically ones like what tool do you use to create this kind of output, etc.

2.  Practical knowledge in how to apply what you learned - This aspect tests your ability to synthesize what you memorized and apply it to specific situations.  These are typically the scenario questions that lay out a situation and ask you what you would do in that situation.

3.  Logic and test taking ability - Many of the questions test to see if you can follow a situation logically from where they start you in the question to the correct anser or if you can reverse engineer a scenario to come up with a logical answer.  Having a solid understanding of logic will help you to understand what exactly they are asking and thus help you to identify the correct answer.  This is often referred to your test taking ability and is not unique to the PMP exam but all exams wherever they are taken (highschool, college, or grad school).  Some people are just better test takers than others and that is often because they have a better grasp of logic and can more easily follow the thought process of the question.

So where do you go from here,  First, don't give up the PMP is a passable test.  Second try to identify whether your difficulty is from a lack of understanding of the material, a lack of ability to apply the material, or the fact that you do not take tests well.  You could have the PMBOK memorized word for word, and be able to apply all that knowledge and still fail the test if you are a poor test taker.  If this is the case work on learning how to improve your test taking abilities.

I hope this helps and besst of luck to you!

Gregg

I have failed twice with the following scores:

05/29/12 results: FAIL

Initiation- BP

Planning-MP

Execution-MP

Monitoring and controlling-BP

Closing-BP

06/26/12 results: FAIL

Initiation- BP

Planning-MP

Execution-MP

Monitoring and controlling-MP

Closing-BP

I really studied for the first and second exams.  My second exam was exactly the same as the first.   Same questions.  Has anybody had this experience?  I knows it seems like thsi should have been easy.  But, it was actually harder.  As I went through the questions I realized that I had seen them before but I did not know whice responses were right and which were wrong.  So there was no benefit to having the same test.

Hi,

Don't lose heart.

Try to recollect those questions and try to get answeres for those from PMBOK or from someone who can provide guidence to u.

As you know the type of questions and how to approch, get the certification with someone's guidence.

I am sorry to hear this sad news for you.

There is always a next time. Although you have not said what all books you referred and mock test you took, but I can sense your preparation was limited to just one or same source.

My advice is that look for options, exploring and trying different options would open your eyes more. When you explore things you learn and accept various taste that makes you more mature and more strong.

Read people who passed PMP over here, what they referred, what timelines worked for them, which test they tried and make a plan for you and stick to it. Once you challenge success, it has to come to you…how long it can stay away from a powerful person?

Saket, PMP

Sorry to hear that.

But, you need to ask yourself if you have done your best in the preparation for PMP? Have you tried your best to understand all processes and ITTOs in PMBOK? If the answers are negative, you should know what to do, dude.

I don't think the PMP exam is something more difficult than school end-of-term examination, although I did feel it's quite hard. It's just a certification exam after all. if you can spend 2 to 3 hours on the preparation every day at average, I believe you can pass it within 8 to 10 weeks. What you need to do is to understand process and ITTO as deeply as possible and to do some full mock test like PMStudy, Headfirst, etc (Don't need to do any tough questions as they're not quite helpful). You don't need to memorize process and ITTO. But memorization should be performed only after good understanding is done, if you're really keen on memorizing.

Spare no efforts on it and you must be able to pass it! Believe yourself!

Good luck to you, dude!

I also did not clear my PMP got 2MP and 3BP.. Please advise how and where s/d i look for strength as well as weak areas....Don't know how do they come up with such score.

Followed PMBoK,Rita and every other stuff that successful candidates have shared in this forum.
