Collection of PDU's
Submitted by saidumd on Wed, 10/31/2012 - 10:48
Dear folks,
I have a confusion to be clarified. Kindly guide me to understand the duration for collecting PDU's. I passed PMP in July 2011. Do I need to earn 20 pdu's every year or can I collect 60 pdu's before 3rd year, and then submit to PMI ?
Regards,
Abbas.

You can earn your 60 PDUs
You can earn your 60 PDUs anytime during the three years of the cycle. There's no mandate regarding minimum number of PDUs that you have to earn during each of the three years.
It's also a good practice to submit/claim each PDU on the PMI portal as and when you earn it(instead of waiting till the fag end of the 3rd year).

You can collect your 60 PDUs at any point within 3 years. You can earn PDUs through various sources which also includes doing a course with some of the training companies like PMstudy, PMTI, etc.

Collecting PDUs
You just need to earn 60 PDUs anytime during the three years of the cycle. There's no other mandate regarding this.
Earning PDUs should not be a problem since there are many training and certification courses available which provides PDUs along with their course. Since Scrum and Agile courses are the hot cakes now, you can consider taking up Scrum/Agile courses. There are 3 main training providers for Scrum Master and Agile courses: SCRUMstudy.com, Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org. You can consider any of these.

60 PDUs can be earned anytime during the three years of the cycle.
I agree with Victorsimson regarding earning of PDU's by completing SCRUM or Agile Training. These two certifications are the talk of the town.Recently I took SCRUM Certification from SCRUMstudy.com and I earned 36 PDU's (16 PDU's for SCRUM certification and additional 20 PDUs for Complimentary Risk Management Course)

Collection of PDU's
Regarding your question, the 60 pdu's needed at the end of the 3 years can infact be collected in the third year itself but i would suggest against it. Simply because the reason for creating a continuous education pattern would be defeated if you only do it to maintain your certification rather than to learn and grow as a project manager. However at the end of the day its your call. You can visit - http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Maintain-Your-Credential.aspx to get a deeper understanding on how to maintain your PMP certification. Also it would be advisable to identify PMI REP's who provide multiple courses along with PDU's so you can tie up with one and make it that much easier for yourself. I personally am making use of PMstudy.com and now scrumstudy.com, both offered by the same provider amongst other courses along with valid PDU's. The call is yours

Earning PDUs
Since you have completed PMP, doing a Scrum/Agile certification would be a good idea. Also you can earn clos to 40 PDUs by doing a Scrum Master course. Six Sigma certification can also be considered but Scrum is so popular these days, I would suggest you to do a course on Scrum first. The blow link would be really usefulin selecting the right course for you.
