Passed PMP exam today - A new insight

Hi All,

 

I will keep this post short and sweet. I Passed my PMP exam today.

 

1. Time spend studying : -  6 weeks - 8 hrs a day - 5 days a week

2. Study Material :-  PMBOK 4th Edition ( read 3 times) , pmstar.org material and simulation exams. ( Studied the pmstar material twice ) .

3. Mock exams : from wherever i could find the free ones.

4. Finished exam an hour earlier i.e. 4 hr exam was done in 3 hrs.

5. The exam : The pmp exam I had given today , proved every advise I have read on any PMP board WRONG.

I got 52 mathmetical questions on EMV ,CPM, and EVM ( Majority of them were from EVM). So as you can say more than  25% of my exam were mathmatical questions.

Only two questions related to inputs and tools and techniques.

The rest of the questions were very practical. They were situation based i.e. real life scenario based.

The english and the grammer was twisted. It seems like they wanted to test the grammer instead of PM knowledge. This makes the situation based questions very tricky.

6. Results : Initiating       Proficient

                      Planning      Proficient

                      Executing     Proficient

Monitoring and Control    Moderately Proficient

                     Closing          Moderately Proficient

7. Advise and suggestions : PMBOK EDITION 4 is the bible and is the best study material. Understand the basics from PMBOK edition 4.... No matter what others say but i found this book to be very very useful. Nothing can explain basics better than this book. It seems to me that either the format of PMP exam is changing or I was one of those unlucky one who got this format of numerous mathmatical questions,Concentrate on chapter COSTs and every simple formulae related to costs and risks and understand the basics.

what was the average time you spend on every EVM question. Was they complicated? would you please explain more regarding these issues? . where did you practice EVM questions?

1.The average time was 3-4 minutes on each question. ( I do not know if I got all of the answers correct. I did the best i could).

2. They were complicated. . I had to come up with certain formulas from the given formulas. For example there was one question about finding ETC when its atypical. I do not know what the formula for atypical ETC is . PMBOK 4th edition only gives us EAC calculations , so what i did was i took EAC = AC+ ETC from this formula i derived ETC = EAC - AC . In the question they mentioned atypical so i subsituted atypical EAC formula in this equation i.e. ETC = AC+(BAC - EV) - AC. No EMV or EVM question was straight forward.

3. First of all you will find lots of EVM , EMV , CPM , CCM and other type of PMP mathmatical questions on internet. I used to find the questions related to each topic on google and then practiced them. Nothing can beat internet in finding hundreds of mathmatical PMP questions. My advice would be-  go on internet and look for EVM and EMV questions for PMP exam and start solving them.

4. Please make sure that you understand the concepts of EMV, EVM , TCPI clearly. Once you understand what these terms stands for and why do PMs use them in real projects and why are they useful you will nail every mathmatical question in PMP exam related to COSTS and RISKS.

Once again, congrats on passing the exam.

 

What sort of Risk questions were there?

 

Did they pay any attention to Procurement as that is a large part usually dealt with by the Procurment department.

 

Did Time, AON networks and the like feature on your exam?

Congratulatinos,

there's one open question i have for CPM - i havent been able to get consistent opinions from various references ( Farndales Q set, Rita, Head first etc) . were there any questions expliclitly focusing on ES/EF,LS/LF ?

Critical path identification is otherwise an easy task, but start with has impact on actual start/finish dats, wondering what approach you took for preparation or during the exam.
