Corrective action VS defect repair
You are involved in a project for manufacturing ball bearings. You notice that the quality of the ball bearings produced has deviated from the parameters specified in project management plan. In order to bring it in line with the specifications, you initiate measures, which are referred to as:
Choice 1 Corrective action
Choice 2 Change requests
Choice 3 Defect repair
Choice 4 Preventive action
Correct Choice : 1
Justification :
Corrective action is documented direction for executing the project work to bring projected future performance in line with the project management plan.
Reference: PMBOK® Guide Fourth Edition, Page 83
My answer - Choice 3
How is this not a defect repair if it is deviating from parameters sepcified?

While studing this question
While studing this question arises to every aspirants of PMP.
Bring it in line is key word --- means exactly not the same defective component , but further future results will come in line after corrective action
Whereas defect- repair -- action or direction , through that defected components are checked in perform quality control - whether are to repair or to reject completely as rework.
and Preventive action or direction are activities required to perform for taking advance action to avaoid any negative consequences , which were recognized and requested, well in advance any risk or failure occur.

Hi, It is clear in the
Hi,
It is clear in the question "To bring it in line" . "To bring in line" is always future oriented. You can also rephrase the question to understand it as:
" When you know planned parameters are being deviated, what is the first thing to do? " Do you repair (or reject) the already defect pieces OR correct your process so that future deliverables are not affected.
So, the correct answer would be, first to fix the error in the process that produces the defective pieces. That is you take a "Corrective Action". First step is to see to that further productions are not affected, so you take a "corrective action". Otherwise, if you think you should repair the exisiting pieces first, then you will actually have to the stop the further production, else you will continue to produce defective pieces.
An example can be: TATA company first fixed the problem in the process that produced defective NANO cars. Then they re-called already sold cars to repair or replace. Similar examples we see of Mobile/Cell phones .etc
Hope this helps.
