Whats the best way to enjoy reading PMBOK

 Dear Friends,

Firstly let me convey my sincere thanks to the admisitrator of the site, its who has is building zeal to reach to my goal of achieving PMP. Sincere  thanks to you.

I have started reading PMBOK, but I really feel very bored after reading one chapter. Is there any interesting way to over come this. I do really request from the PMP achievers to kindly post  email for the preparation plan on daily basis to complete the journey of PMP. This might really helpful for the people like me who are planning to move ahead towards the journey of PMP.

I am enjoying reading head first. But as per to the posts in forum I do realise that its most imp. to read PMBOK too.

I am planning to appear for exam in Nov. Can any one kindly post the plan for preparation of PMP exam. Though it sounds silly but this is very imp. for me.

Congrats to all PMP certified professionals.

Thank you,

Vishwanath

If you have a PDF copy of it, let a software read it alound for you. You may not be reading but you may enjoy listening, at the same time you take some fingerfoods while listening - you can do it while in the car, in the comfort room, etc. hahaha.

I guess this is enjoyable dude.

You are not at all silly in asking this wonderful question. People like me who are into this profession will always keep taking about PMBOK because we had a long journey. But PMP aspirants like you will not be able to climb the pyramid top immediately on startup. This is the reason why your brain is not accepting PMBOK. You have to understand that PMBOK is a research book from PMI where thousands of mind have contributed their thoughts. When you have such research piece with you, its not going to be easy to understand.

Change your approach. PMP aspirants like you should start with books like Rita and Headfirst and read some of the real life project management examples. Rita fits here the best. Once you understand project management in real life with some examples, then you should get into PMBOK if you want to make use of it efficiently. PMI would frame PMP question using PMBOK so you know how well you should read PMBOK.

I guess by know, you understand that you will have to re-plan your approach to understand PMP chapters.

Thank you for your prompt replies. I have completed half the way reading Head first. I am really enjoying the book.

Saket What you say is true, I would request you to kindly help me in preparing a plan to reach my goal. I have daily 4 hours on week days and wekends completly dedicated for my goal. So  I would be obilized to you for helping  me in preparing the plan as per day to day  i.e chapters etc..  Planning to appear for exam in first week of Nov 2012.

I convey my sincere thanks to this site members for providing me an opportunity to express my concerns and lend a helping hand from PMP professionals to reach goals of all PMP aspirants.

Thanks

Vishwanath

Please make a plan and stick to it. As per my years of experience in this field, people fail in PMP because they start to run to acquire more and more knowledge and they loose focus from the actual preparations that's really needed. Plan this way:

First 30 days: Read and enjoy books like Rita and Headfirst and make sure you peacefully understand the chapter end questions and its explanations provided.
Next 30 days: Get into PMBOK and read it couple of times. The section you find difficult to understand from PMBOK, refer your favourite reference books for that section.
Final 20-30 days: Start taking mock test. Choose the online one where you see PMP exam type portal. Dont worry what result you get. The more you finds gaps, the more you are going to improve. You can find many free mock test available across, if you plan to buy any, choose the one where you score low. Once you start feeling comfortable and confident, schedule you exam. You can easily schedule your exam in 15 days.
2 days before the exam: Dont take any mock test. Just read some self made IITO notes, PMBOK IITO pages, summery pages etc.

Here is another way to overcome boredom.

Read only 1 process from PMBOK at once and not whole chapter! That's how I did.

Once done, leave PMBOK and then read that process from some other book lke Rita or HeadFirst or Kim Heldman.

Once done, read that process again from PMBOK and now you will have sufficient understanding of it.

Once you have completed process from both books, throw them away and take a long break. Watch a movie, play video game e.t.c.

There are 42 processes so if you just do 2 process per day then you will be able to finish it in 21 days. Some processes may take more than 1 day because they are longer than others while some are so short that you can do 4 or 5 in one day.

 Dear Saket and Aliweb,

thank you very much for your promt reply and valuable suggesstions. I shall follow the same.

Regards,

Vishwanath

One more thing I forgot. If you are not already doing this, try to read PROCESS GROUPS wise (which is the natural order of doing projects) rather than KNOWLEDGE AREA wise (which is how all books are normally written).

I do tend to agree with aliweb who said to read just 1 or 2 processes in a day...that's the way I have been doing it of late; prior to which I was reading everything all at one;hence, it all became confusing and very, very frustrating.

It is very important to understand the language of the PMBOK and as the saying goes: THERE IS ALWAYS A METHOD TO A MADNESS.

I wish you the very best in your Journey.

Cheers!
