No. It's not a MUST but in case your application gets randomly selected for an 'audit', you would have to submit documentary evidence of your Project Management experience.
You need to work in projects with some higher role like a Team Lead, POC/SPOC or PM. As long as you have lead a project and you can show 4,500 hours of project work (non overlapping), you are eligible for PMP credentials.
