Early start calculation - Schedule network diagram

I have a question related to how to calculate activify free float.
The fist activity in the diagram normally has an early start of zero, but I see some people use 1 has the early start of the first activity. Which one is correct? If I use Zero, then my free float comes one less.
Also, it sounds like if I srart first activity with 1, then I have to use ES = EF of successor + 1 formula.
Can someone please help? PMBOK does not specify anything on how to calculate early start.

This is purely scenario based.
Its same as you are asking me – How is my project performance. I cannot have this answer generic and static. Before concluding I will refer project progress, status and various other information i.e. scenario given.
As a rule of thumb the fist activity of the project starts the same day and hence ES=0. This is an assumption by default. It’s a real life scenario.
BUT, what if the first activity cannot start the first day? We can have such cases, isn’t it?
Morel of the story – read and study the scenario given, there is no hard and fast rule that ES of first activity is always 0. Of course its 0 by default by assumption.

I don't have access to book right now but if I remember correctly, Rita says that when you use "1" then you must subtract it while calculating free float.
When you are using "0", don't need to subtract it while calculating free float.
EDIT
Ok I just had a look at Rita 7th edition and couldn't find it. But I am 100% sure I have seen it somewhere. I will try to find out.

F Float = LS - ES or LF- EF , this formula is same for both the methods.
