PMBOK Questions

I have the following questions about PMBOK:

1. Preventive Action vs Risk Mitigation:

Are they essentially different from each other?

2. In which progress group or KA are the planned Risk Responses implemented? PMBOK's descriptions are quite confusing:

P83. (Direct and manage Project Execution) includes: Manage risks and implement risk response activities;

P308. Monitor and Control Risks is the process of implementing risk response plans...

Both talking about 'Implementing risk response (plan)', which is quite confusing!

Thank you projmanpro!

But you only explained my point 1. What about point 2? Can you give explanation on it?

Anybody can help resolve my confusion on point 2?

Waiting for answer!

 Danny,

I guess I understand your confusion but realise this thing first before discussion risk response:

Project execution and Monitroing and control goes together (for all knowledge areas), so you keep on executing your plan and keep on monitoring if your execution is according to the baseline(as planned). And if you see the variance you try to control it by change requests etc.

So same thing applies to Risk response as well, you planned some risk response and you execute those as the risk arises, at the same time you also monitor it whether that is working or not. Additionally as you execute those responses you have to remember two more things: there are some residual risk(which was left alone without a response) and more importantly you will have to watch out for Secondary risk as result of applying executing the risk response and you have to monitor and control those secondary risks as well.

I did read pag 308 and very next para tells just that. Remeber that "Risk Respons" strategy is in the risk register itself and risk register keep on getting updated not just in execution(See Figure 11-18 there risk register is an input) but also in Monitoring and contorl(see figure 11-20 and risk register is an input as well).

So these processes are discrete but still interact.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your clarification! I think I'm clearer about it.

Here you can understand like that :

RISK RESPONSES - it is a process as well as an group of activities

Plan Risk response  is a process in planning process group ,

The same will be execurted as activities under "direct and manage project execution process" in Executing process groups.

In Monitoring and controlling group , it (Prepared Risk Responses plan)  will be implemented , tracked ---- and many more actions are there and this process as whole is called Monitoring and control Risk,

Here one Plan is implemented at 2 places, one is executing and other is Monitoring, it is your query.

So one plan can be implemented in various process groups with respective activities. There is no restrictions or any rule that it cant be so.

For Example

A industry is making toys:

In thick I make a risk response plan, that if any failure or break down of Block, it will be replaced .

Now , suppose a Block has got failed , then Risk response plan will be come in action of executing process group - concern department will act and replace the Block.

Under monitoring and controlling process group, Risk response again come in action , by testing that new Block either performing well or not.
