Passed PMP Exam

I passed PMP Exam on Friday. My score is below:

Initiation - Proficient

Planning - Moderately Proficient

Execution - Moderately Proficient

Monitoring & Control - Proficient

Closing - Proficient

My Observations about Exam:

  • The exam was very easy
  • Many answer choices were ridicolously wrong so you can get answer to many questions just by process of elimination
  • Only few questions were long
  • Most of questions were one liner or two liner
  • Some questions were just so straight forward and easy
  • The exam start was not difficult. But the early questions were comparatively more difficult then  the later ones

I wondered why certain questions were even asked.

My Study Books

  • Read PMBOK once (Took a month to read it and read it completely like a month ago)
  • RITA (Took a month to read and completed reading it two days before exam
  • I wanted to revise them but did not get chance. I am slow reader and also have ADHD

Study Strategy

  • Focused Rita and PMBOK on understanding Project Management. Especially rita book was good and I understood the concepts really well. Unfortunately, I really wanted to revise it but ran out of time
  • When ever a concept was difficult for me in RITA, I would google topic to understand it
  • I did not take any practice tests. Being ADHD, It's difficult for me to sit through 4 hour test. I can sit in one test if I know it is just one. But I do not havd stamina for a 4 hour test. Further tests make wear out before exams
  • I work full time and then I have commitments such as grad school, gym and spend time away on weekends with family so I could not study dedicatedly until last 5days.
  • During last 5 days, I studied on average of about 15 hours a day.
  • I did not memorize ITTO. However, with common sense you can get inputs and outputs right if you understand project management.
  • I did Rita quiz questions at the end after every chapter. The questions I did wrong, I made sure I know why I did wrong.

Exam Strategy

Being a bad test taker who runs out of time always, this was my strategy:

  • I gave one good shot to every question and did not mark any thing for review.
  • Review button if not used with discipline and strategically can be a double edge sword. Never mark a lot of questions for review and then count on getting back to them at the end. Because you might not just get time.
  • I aimed to complete 25 questions every 30 min. I was running late on this goal until last hour (Like net 25 questions late).
  • I speed up during last 1 hour to complete 70 questions or so.
  • I wrote all formulas in begining. I drew process chart from PMBOK too which took 15 minutes and have me started on exam late. Process chart did not help me. Formulas did.
  • I finished exam two minutes before end time. Then i just pressed end.
  • Since I did not pace my self really well, I had to go through some questions very quick to catch up and I was not 100% sure whether I was correct.
  • My fear was if varience between target rate and actual rate is so high, I will get very nervous and get even questions I know wrong. This happens to almost all of us.
  • Some how I was nervous that I would not pass. But I passed.

Suggestions

  • Focus on understanding RITA Book. Do not focus on memorization.
  • Do not waste time in making process chart in exam. If you have studied you should know by heart what all processes are and where they fall.
  • It might help to draw planning process group only  in same order from RITA's Chart
  • Read Rita Chart many times and do that game after it to know where every activity fall.
  • For formulas read them from RITA for EVM. They are also at end of book. Read them and start writing them early when you start studying for PMP so that by time you get to those topic you know them by heart.
  • Know PMBOK chart by heart
  • Use google to clarify any topic. Do not over study any topic. Just know what it is. Applications questions are easy.
  • During exam don't fall behind on time because it will make you nervous and get even questions you know wrong.
  • KNOW THE BIGGER PICTURE. HOW DOES EACH PROCESS AND EVERY THING YOU LEARN RELATES TO EACH OTHER IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT (Use rita and PMBOK chart)
  • You must know what are tools and techniques and be able to identify them. Focusing on memorizing inputs and outputs is waste of time. But certainly tools and techniques is easier and practical and will help you. THIS does not mean that you have to remember them by heart. It means you need to know what they are, and if you get question which process they are associated with. There is big different in memorizing them and knowing where they fall and what they are and later is easier.

Print out the chart with all processes in certain knowledge area. This is in PMBOK in each knowledge area chapter. That chart will tell you about all processes in knowledge area and their ITTO's on one page. So you will have like 9 pages after print out. Attach Rita and PMBOK process chart to this sheet. Now 1-2 days before exam, start from integration, understand whether you understand meaning of each input output and tool and technique. If you do not then mark it, and then open rita and pmbok together and read that particular topic. This will really tell you whether there are any holes in you knowledge and help you integrate every thing you learn into a cohesive whole. KNOW the bigger picture of how it all integrates and how changes in one affect other.

I also have SPHR certification. I thought that PMP exam was way easier then SPHR.

Best of luck all.

Congrats on clearing pmp! your LL's are definitely inspiring & most of us will feel motivated to attempt for the exam positively.

Can you please share your mock test scores? how many did you give?

I did not take any mock tests. I know this sound unusual but with ADHD it is very difficult to sit for a 4 hour mock test. I thought that if I start taking these mock tests it will wear me down. Further, I did not had enough time to test as it took me forever to read PMBOK and RIta.

However, I did Rita's quizzes at end of each knowledge area. Those questions were good. PMP Exam was certainly not more tougher than them. I scored between 80-90% on average on them.

 Hi ,
