Calculating communication channels n(n-1)/2
Does "n" represents both stake holders and team members?

communication formulae
Stakeholders- The persons or organisation or public that are impacted by the project.
So in the formula N(N-1)/2 you need to consider N as stake holder.
In the example provided by you " can have 5 team members working on this project / 10 stakeholders. "
5 team members (stakeholders)+ other 5 stakeholders = 10 stakeholders
No of Communication channel = 10*9/2 = 45.

We need to consider N as a
We need to consider N as a stake holder and it is 10 in this case. Communication channels has nothing to do with the team members working n the project. Finally the answer 45 that 'pkukilla' arrived at is right, assuming that there are 10 stakeholders.
Detailed explanation of why this is so:
Say there are 2 stakeholders in your project. It means that there is 1 communication channel between them, as they need to interact between themselves, to see that their needs go in together. So the formula N(N-1)/2 comes to 2(2-1)/2 = 1. Similarly if we take 3 stake holders A, B, C....there would be communications between A,B A,C B,C which is 3 in count and matches with 3(3-1)/2=3. We do not consider communication B,A as the channel is the same as in A,B

N just represents the TOTAL
N just represents the TOTAL POPULATION (OR PERSONS) INVOLVED OR SPECIFICIED IN THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS, REGARDLESS IF HE IS A STAKEHOLDER, TEAM MEMBER, ETC. PROVIDED MENTIONED AND SPECIFIED.

this can be tricky since, we never consider the PM as part of the communication channel..In certain questions we need to add the PM in the calculation..read the question wording carefully..

BUT some times option have no choice
You are right Dude !
but many framed question I saw options does have choice to include self (PM), in that case leaving self or PM - answer has to be marked.
