PMP Beginner And Lost in From where to prepare :(

 Hello All,

I am new to this forum as well as to PMP. I have started preparing for PMP and first book which I took was Andy Crowe - How to Pass PMP in first attemp. Read 5 chapters then my friend suggested about Rita Mulcahy although I have just the 6th edition. So in nutshell I am confused whether to take up Andy and complete that or leave Andy and jump to Rita and then finally PMBOK. Can anyone please take me out of this dilemma.

Thanks

Prachi

thats exactly my question in the post need help getting started. i have the same books but could only go as far as chapter 3. i know for sure we cant leave pmbok. but which of teh other two to follow since there approaches are so different.

how are you planning to study? may be we can plan some thing. when do you wantto give teh exam?

I also jsut started preparing. I read PMBOK and Rita's 6th edition and I think Rita's book covers all that isn PMBOK. I also read somewhere on the forum that there is minor difference in 6th and 7th so I am going to follow 6th editon only.

Hope this helps

Hey.. I have decided that I will going through first with Rita 6th edition, complete it by 3rd of december and then PMBOK and then again Rita.. Wat do you say ??

3rd december or do you mean january? if thats so thats so then iam with you. how about we finish rita nad maybe discuss if we get stuck. should we make a weekly plan? that way we can motivate each other too.

I started with Rita and wanted to ask whether you start memorizing Process chart right from begining or gradually do that... because there are many exercises based on the chart....and ofcourse no one can memorize that chart in one go.... any comments ??

I have been told by several coworkers that 6th and 7th Rita are very similar and either will do. I'm not familar with Andys, but I have finished using Ritas as prep and would definitely recommend it. Though there are several things in it I disagree with for application in the real world, but overall as exam prep I think its good.

how much is there to memorize? it seemed like alot. iam i thinking correctly? i mean the proccesses ITTO's etc

Go with Andy Crowe and all (4) practice tests from PMStudy. Remember to read the actual PMBOK at least (3) times (preferably chapter by chapter as you go through Crowe). Since you've already begun with Crowe, there is no need for Rita also. That is all that I needed to pass.

Best of luck.

When I started reading Andy I found that book interesting and simple to learn but 8 out 10 ppl suggested me Rita so I switched to Rita and currently now on 3 rd chapter...... so what do you feel ??

iam doing rita. i have read chapter three. doing the excersises. i was confused if whether or not i should memorize the chart...so i did. but i dont think i needed too. i am now on actions part..iam trying to understand the concept here.

I too did the same thing...first I thought shld memorize the chart but then left and moved ahead... now on exercise part of chapter 3 and will start today chapter 4.. let see how it goes.......

gr8. ill do the same. how did u do on the practice test at the chapter end?

Not that good.. I have understood that first reading will be just to get the feel.. 2nd 3rd reading needs to be good...wat is your exercise outcome ??

i read the chapter 3 and thought i understod it well enough to attempt the exercise. but got 33/55. woof! im stressed now. reading the chapter again. havent done the exam question at teh end of teh chpt as yet.  where are you located prachi? im in USA.

I am not sure about your strategy for this exam but mine is 1st reading will be to gain the knowledge, get the feel and from 2nd reading I will start rating myself. I am not in hurry to give the exam and no point in getting tensed just relax and learn stuffs with cool mind and set a target date for exam as per your efforts and go and crack it... :) :)

i guess you may be right. although i have only done the excersise as suggested by rita but my score made me stress. iam therefore not attempting the question. i'll do that in my 2nd or 3rd round of reading however i will do the excesises. they sort of help in guiding if iam reading the text as i should..

i like your phrase:  'go and crack it"  maybe i'll write it on my wall ;) motivating

 Cool :)

Planning phase has least money involved because it’s all about making various baselines (scope, cost, time, risk, quality etc) and getting it approved. The worst case is the plan rejection, but this is iterative as you can re-plan your baselines as per PMBOK. Hence planning process should be least risky.

I do not even know how I ended up here, but I thought this post was good. I don't know who you are but certainly you're going to a famous blogger if you aren't already Cheers!

Anyone on 4th Chapter of Rita? I would like to some queries on that....

Thanks

I only used Andy's book and the online practice test from the same book.  Never read nor seen the PMBoK.  Understand the concepts of the ideas and the formula.  The questions in the actual exam will not be the same.  But if you understand the concepts, everything in the exam will make sense and you will pass the certification.  I passed the exam on my first take.  1.5 months of serious studying.  The last 2 days I crammed.  I was relaxed when I started the exam.  It took me 3.5 hours to answer all the questions and do the review.

Good luck.
