PMP Exam Question: Number of Communication Channels in Q?

You are in charge of a project that deals with laying out a lavish 18 hole golf course.The project work is in progress.You also have a number of contractors working on the project.Being an experienced manager you know that communication is key to success of the project.You have identified 10 stakeholders with whom you need to communicate.Due to some internal and external organizational changes at the client end three new stakeholders have been added with whom you need to communicate with.You also had to reduce one of the contractors with whom you were communicating.How many communication channels do you have now?
1. 45
2. 78
3. 91
4. 66
Correct Answer is : 4

Originally you had 10 stakeholders to communciate with - so number of communication channels were 10 * (10-1) /2 = 45.However the question states that 3 new stakeholders got added while 1 stakeholder got reduced.So total number of stakeholders = 10 + 3 -1 = 12 So the total number of communication channels are (12 * ( 12-1 )) /2 = 66 So the correct answer is option D

As per my understanding answer should be. Option#2,
As N=13 (Included all stakeholders 12 + you as PM) (Derived from Rita)
So Total Comm Channels: 78

N should be 13, since PM is also a communication channel.

N=1+10+3-1= 13
so 13*12 /2=78

Hi,
PM + 10 stakeholders = 11 persons
Later 3 more person added, then 11+3 = 14
Then removed 1 person, then 14-1=13

13*12/2=78

So , Option # 2 is correct.

When the PM says, initially she/he had counted that total number of stakeholders to be ten, I think it would be wrong to assume she/he did not count herself/himself as one of those ten. How can we be so sure that the PM did not count herself/himself? 10-1=9 + 3 = 12. So number of communication channels is (144-12) / 2 = 66. That is my take on this one!

Reason provided by KABANERGi is very correct.

Even i got similar question in my Exam & I chose the option, in which PM had considered himself included due to the reason mentioned by kabanergi above
