Pls. help with answering this question?

Don't be fooled by the poorly worded question, The key word is measurement.

Should it  be benchmarking. ?

Inspection is the right answer and not benchmarking because:

1. In inpection you measure where as in benchmarking you compare.

2. Also Since you are measuring it seems more like you are in M&C procee group (Perform Quality Control) and Inspection is the tool but Benchmarking is a tool in plan quality.

It is Benchmarking!

Parto Analysis and Root cause analysis is anyway not the answer.

Benchmarking - is done during quality planning

The answer is so simple now i.e. "Inspection" that is done during M&C of quality process and is measurable against standard (benchmarking)

Even I do belive it to be inspection but the answer says Benchmarking, which I am not ok with. As per PMBOK Benchmarking is about process, it use to compare with other projects and see how good is are bad the current process is and what are room for improvement etc.

The key is that you are comparing it to something external to the product meaning that it can only be benchmarking. Any point of reference can be used - the 'standard' to which you are comparing the product. Inspection is an evaluation to ensure that requirements have been met.

Six sigma materials have good descriptions of benchmarking and inspection. And dont forget - the PMBOK is mostly only useful as a coffee coaster.

 Deleted double post.

 Benchmarking

Many Times people,  Avoid PMBOK reference, and crticise.

I believe PMBOK is a guide, a torch, many things it contains with the clarity of self proof. No additional reference or expert judgement is needed.

Sometimes when people goes against of any verdict of PMBOK, with the excuse of PMBOK is not solution, I disagree with such remarks.

I see PMBOK is not complete but not to say could not be referential. You can refer first PMBOK then others, if you find it is silent or undescriptive then you may refer with the basics of PMBOK ( in the light of , as a guide) to other references.

with this understanding,

If we look PMBOK

Definitions of both the opttions - BENCHMARKING and INSPECTION is available.

My findings on the basis of this 2 definitions, is that benchmarking is not a measuring act with the standard. Inspenction is a measuring act with respect to the standards.

So answer is INSPECTION and NOT benchmarking.
