How I collected my 60 PDUs

After revision in March 2011, PMP PdU collection has become very easy. You can claim 30 PDUs for self directed learning (earlier it was 15 PDUs) and 15 PDUs in 3 years for PM Practioner. Assuming most PMPs are practicing PM profession, getting 45 PDUs is cake walk . So you just have to worry about the remaining 15 PDUs.

1. I had developed a 1/2 day course in my company, for which I got 16 PDUs.

2. I had taken a class on the above course for 4 hours.

So easily I could claim 20 PDUs, I had attended some PMI sessions and that was bonus.

So most people can now focus on getting 15 PDUs, but since you can transfer 20 PDUs to next cycle, its advisable that you take a course which offers 30-40 PDUs, that way you dont have to worry for 6 years.

I strongly advise PMPs to keep their certification valid as you never know when it will come handy. PMP is becoming defacto rule for hiring laterals in many organizations.

Hi Admin

I have enterned this era now where I will now try to collect the PDUs to keep my certification alive. Can you please explain further in detail that how can I get 30 PDUs for self Directed Learning and 15 for PM Practitioner. For PM Practitioner, I understood that someone have to give a class to others on Porject Managemnet and/or PMP to claim 15 PDUs. Is it right? and what about Self Directed Learning. Also one more explanation, I did one course in Cost Management last year 11-12 Apr-2010. I did not claim that course for 35 PDUs to sit for the exam. So can these PDUs be claimed now?

If you read the new PDU document you will see that 30 PDUs can be claimed for SDL, you will have to keep your notes of discussion or self learning as proof .

If you work as project manager or above in your organization you can claim 15 PDUs in 3 years.

I am not sure if your course on cost management would qualify since it was taken before your PMP. However there is no harm in claiming since you would have put the date when entering course details.

Thanks for your response. One more question arises from your reply. Is it necessary to have your designation as "Project Manager"? Currently I am working as Sr Engineer Planning & Control reporting to Project Manager. Actually its not a small project as most of the cases in Matrix Organization and neither its a small designation in the company considering a project value of 600 Million Dollars. So with the current title, can I claim PDUs?

How to Get my 60 PDUs for PMP Re-certification?

As per PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR), every PMP needs to re-certify his/her credentials every 3 years. In order to re-certify, a PMP needs to earn 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every 3 years. There are numerous ways to earn these PDUs such as Practicing Project, attending trainings, seminars, workshops, self-learning, or doing voluntary work for PM communities.

After I passed my PMP exam, there was a sense of relief and satisfaction. Three months of rigorous preparation had turned into sweet success. I also received good recognition for my achievement, from my employer. I was on a high and time whizzed by. Before I knew, six months had passed. That's when it struck me that PMP Certification is not forever. I need to re-certify by earning 60 PDUs every three years. But I was left with not three, but only two and a half years to achieve this target.

I started searching for information on earning PDUs and found a lot of it. So much so that I was totally overwhelmed and confused. I had no idea where to begin from and where these 60 PDUs would come from. I found several courses, which offered 20-30 PDUs, but costed hundreds of dollars. I certainly did not want to spend this amount of money every year on earning PDUs. I thought to myself that with 250 thousand PMPs out there, there ought to be some easier and cost-effective ways to get these PDUs. So, I decided to dig further.

Gradually, the hard work started paying off. I started finding several good and effective ways to earn these PDUs, without burning a hole in my pocket. Just to give you an idea, I managed to earn 35 PDUs within just 5 months using the sources listed below, and without spending too much money.

I shared these ideas with many of my fellow PMP friends and colleagues. Their positive response encouraged me to create this article.

With this article, my aim is to help familiarize fellow PMPs with the 'simplest' and most 'economical' means to earn the 60 PDUs, which will qualify for PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR).
