I am having hard time understanding Monitor and control project works. Why do we need this when we have control scope, schedule, cost risk and quality. Can someone please explain.

There is some overlap in
There is some overlap in Monitoring and control project work process and Control scope, Control cost etc. Please remember that Integration management is like a horizontal which cuts across all project management areas. The M&C process there is generic, meaning you monitor and control at overall project level and it could lead to changes to any of the other aspects like cost, schedule, effort, quality etc. Think of this as you have a team of PMs with one person doing umbrella Project managemnet and others are focussed on specific areas like cost, schedule, quality etc. The person doing umbrella work would be doinging something which is mentioned in Project integration managemnet while others would be doing specific work to their assigned areas.
