Here the risk is "Ontime completion of the project".
If the schedule is extended, then it is possible to eliminate the schedule risk.

avoid vs mitigate risk
This is an example of mitigate risk because as the question say you are extending your schedule in order reduce the threat i.e lower the probability and impact of threat occuring .
Avoid risk would have been cancelling the project/ identify new resources that are avialable on time/ change scope etc.
