Question on conflict mgmt

Hi Team,

I have doubt regarding following question from Rita's fast track:

You are in the executing process group of a major project with an estimated cost of US $22 million. Two team members are having a disagreement over the potential sellers of a project component, and the project manager has offered to help. The project manager suggests a compromise, and the team members want to solve the problem. Who should decide on the BEST course of action?

a) Management

b) Team Members

c) Project Manager

d) Customer

Please let me know your thoughts on correct answer.

The answer should be   Team members.

The conflict solution should favor customer

Thanks pkukila,

Even book mentioned answer as B with following reasoning:

"Within reason, the technical experts (generally the team members) should resolve the issue. It is unlikely that there will be an opportunity to compromise on the selection of a seller."

I understand above as well as your reasoning, but I am getting confused due to reasoning that Project Manager has final authority to take decisions. If PM wants to compromise, can team members go against him to solve problem.

Regards,

Jagjit

The best technique for conflict management is confronting and here team members are having expertise knowledge in area they are having conflict and they are looking for solving the problem (confronting).

Always look for keywords,  In this questions keyword is --->  Who should decide

Dont confuse with the complete question, If you answer Project Manager then you are following Forcing technique. Now you left with only one answer that is Team Members.

If the same questions asks you --> whose responsibility to resolve, answer will be PM.
