Quality audit is a tool,
Quality audit is a tool, not a process. So we let it out.
If you have DESIGN problems, it means part of your PRODUCT has problems. This is quality CONTROL.
If you talking about checking the effectiveness of design especification to the whole process, you would be talking about quality ASSURANCE.
But given the fact the process is working fine (design especification is fullfilling its purpose well) and you're worried with the quality of what is inside, you're in quality CONTROL.
