Quality and grade
The questions on quality and grade have been occuring often and are confusing to decide as to what adds to quality and what is a grade? The following question
Q. You are developing an evaluation for various accounting software packages. One application allows you to directly enter and edit entries in the General Ledger. Since this violates Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), it does not satisfy the requirements of public accountants. It does, however, simplify the process of correcting bookkeeping errors. From the perspective of public accountants, you would best rate this product as
A. lower quality and lower grade since it does not conform to the requirements of good accounting practice.
B. higher quality and lower grade since it places a higher priority on end-user needs than accounting principles but would be graded low by most accountants.
C. lower quality and higher grade since it adds more features than found in other accounting packages but would not satisfy the needs of accountants.
D. higher quality and higher grade because the software is remarkably bug-free and adds more features than found in other accounting packages.
How do we really differentiate a product being of high/low qualty and grade?

This is low quality high
This is low quality high grade.
Quality is conformance to requirements. In this case it is low.
Grade, I won't go into exact defination, but high standard & features are not really required.

First one has to understand
First one has to understand quality vs grade. In cars, Mercedez, Audi, BMW are considered High Grade cars and Suzuki, Kia , Hyundai etc are considered lower grade cars. One way to define higher grade is that it has some superior features over the lower grades.
However superior features themselves may have quality issues, like any of the high grade brands can have electrical problems etc. While lower grades cars maybe of excellent quality, whatever they have promised works excellent and is lasting too.
In the above example since requirements has not been met its a lower quality , however its simple to use over others, in the context of this question it can be considered as high grade.

quality definition
Rememer the definition of quality given in PMBOK. I am sure you know this "It is the degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfill requirements". In conjunction with the cars example stated above it should help you remember the difference.
