Providing For Schedule Reserves

Hi all,

I have a question regarding Schedule (Time) reserves. The question is pretty basic but I wanted to know how and if we represent Time reserves in the Gantt chart or in general how do we treat them..

Some possibilities:

Record the Schedule Impact in the risk register.

Record the Schedule Impact in the gantt chart as an element of each task,

Insert an item in the Gantt chart labled Reserves as the last element of the project schedule.

Your view on managing reserve is right, usually project manager use mix of following to manage time reserve.

1. Some add reserve in each activity itself , like you have mostlikely duration is 4 days but you make it 5, you add reserve in each activity.

2. Many time we create activities in schedule to take care of possible risk, so if risk come these activities will be active.

3. Many time at some path end (sometime at WBS level ) we add some reserve activitiy, whcih is to take care of delay in any of the previous activities in that path.

Thank you much Sir - I was rather surprised that my intuition on this one was pretty good.  My preference would be for the solution where we are explicitly putting one buffer at project end or a buffer after each Milestone.

Seems to me if you put a buffer into each task thats just padding which is considered bad practice,

Anyway I appreciate the advice and will check out your link
