Prior to PMP certification - will PDU equal to contact hours?

I am currently enrolled in an online course accredited by PMI. Their Certificates of Completion document indicated "Number of PDU credits". My question: is PDU credits the same as contact hours (prior to getting PMP certification)?

Yes. Some people use PDU and contact hours interchangeably.
