PMP exam - failed on first attempt

I failed yesterday. I'm really surprised how I failed after studing 4 months. I studied PMBOK around 70%, some other questions with answers on the website for free and also this http://www.pmesimulatorexams.com//defaultunsecure.php?page=contactus.

I scored 80 to 90% in all pre exam tests and applied the same knowledge and failed. It looks to me the questions with answers on all free websites even the one I purchased are not correct.  They are misguiding us. It's time, money and energy. PMBOK is not covering all the areas for the exam and we do study other books and websites for sample questions with answers. PMI should update their PMBOK  for their exam.

PMI said to pass the exam, correct only 106 questions out of 200. It means 61% of 175. PMI never said clearly that 106 including 25 or not. If any out of 25 questions fall in 106 means fail. To me to pass the PMP exam we have to make 106+25=131 question correct.  So it is around 66% of 200 questions.

I'm now thinking to go for re-test or not as I'm so upset and not happy. Can some one give me a good advice on this and also if I go for re-test, please recomend me some books and test websites to pass the PMP exam?

Thanks,

Hemanta

Hi Hemanta,

You now have an advantage, since you have already seen the real PMP exam, quickly prepare the list of knowledge areas where you have major gaps, study those in details, recall what questions were asked and try to imagine similar other questions when you are preparing.

As for the books, I would suggest use rita mulcahy's book, along with pmbok , and take the free online tests to further test your knowledge, for paid pmp exam you can either take pmstudy's test or pmzilla's 200 tough questions to further test your knowledge.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your advice. I got today Rita's book of 548 pages and stared reading the book from today. You have given me a good advice and I will follow your advice. I'll update you later when I will pass the exam.

 Hi Hemanta,

Sorry about your exam result. I took my exam on Aug 10th, 2010 and passed on first attempt.  My advice to you would be this:

Read PMBok thoroughly

Read Rita Mulcahy latest edition

Read Head First PMP book (the concepts are explained in an easier way with a lot of examples)

Do the questions after each chapter in both Rita and Head First and take the Head First 200 question simulation exam also.  I feel one should score at least an 80% on that because it is quite simple.

Next, purchase the 200 questions 4 simulation exams from www.pmstudy.com (only fifty bucks)

That was one of the best things I did for my preparation.  The pmstudy.com practice exams are VERY SIMILAR to the actual exam...maybe close to 60%.  If you score an average of 75% on those, I feel you have a good chance to clear the exam.

I also heard from a friend who passed the PMP exam on the second attempt is that the second time exam is more harder.  That PMI will make it more hard for you since you failed the first attempt.  I'm not sure if this is true but that's what my friend told me.  So prepare thoroughly, do as many questions as you can and try to fully digest the PMBok, especially the ITTO.

Best of luck.
