Passed PMP Today : Lessons Learnt
Its such great feeling. I made it through and finally Project PMP moved to closing process.
It was 03:53 hours elapsed time when I completed my first round. Phew. I wasnt sure if I could leave the test with a happy face. Those 20 seconds after survey were like 20 hours.
In the end.. it was cool.. 4Ps and one MP.
My one observation:
In all the study what we usually miss is : to put all the knowledge areas together into the so called "cohesive whole".
Most of the exam questions were based on this. Nearly(!) every question referred to atleast 2 and usually 3 knowledge areas into one Q.
95% Qs were situational
95% of them were wordy and had 2 great choices. It was extremely tough to chose between the two.
70% Qs had 5-7 lines to read. (I was probably unlucky as I heard from others in this forum that that is not the case with them).
5-10% were ITTO but VERY FEW of them refered direct names. Its all the definitions of processes and descriptions/usage of the tools.
10% had numericals and those are the real saviours. They boost your confidence as they have NO ambiguity, by-and-large.
But one thing: Numericals were not too tough to calculate with practice but still the answers make you believe you got something wrong. (pert estimates that could lead to "mostlikely" value ultimately.)
No matter how many times I tried to understand, the differences between the three Quality process is hard to master. But practice a lot of Qs in this area.
One advice: Consider PMP as a project. Its not too tough actually.
Have project high level constraints.
-Highlevel milestones (target date to complete reading, target date to take test),
-Highlevel Risks (What can come in your way to become a PMP, what can delay your preparation).
etc
Have a Plan:
Scope:A quick research on one good book along with PMBOK. I think that is enough. I preferred Rita.
Time :What are the activities: E.g:Read PMBOK, Read the good book, take SELECTED mock tests, Revise etc etc.
Then sequence them. Then have a Schedule.
Cost :Its a waste to spend on all those online "pass-guarantee" papers. control your costs.
-> I tried PMZILLa final, Rita, Oliverlehman, Headfirst, PMstudy. I think these are good enough. PMZilla final is exceptional.
Qlty : Very briefly keep assesing, continously improve, see defects (errors) during tests, find them, fix them, close gaps
HR : If possible.. have a study group..(I didnt have that luxury though)
Comm : Let all your stakeholders (people you are associated with) know that your will behave weirdly (lol) for sometime. Your priority is the PMP test. :). Keep managing their expectations.
Risks: Biggest focus. This can blow off your plans. Biggest risk is that something can alter your study plan when you have less than a month, hence paying additional fee. Just an example
I had several risks. Tried to have a plan to "mitigate" most. I couldnt avoid in my case.
Procurements: Can be excluded, probably.
I followed it nearly but my CPI was <<<1 (well less than one). Because I was desparate to do well and bought some of the needless tests. Those that copy-paste PMBOK text for questions.
Please research and control this. Its a waste of time to go thru those.
On Braindump :
I prepared it..but didnt use it. But its like a companion. You know that someone (ok something !) is with you who can guide in tough situations. Also frees up your mind.
On ITTO Myth :
Memorization could probably get you get a few Qs right. But understanding will get them ALL right. This is my personal opinion. There arent many direct Qs. Hence only way is to understand and apply logic.
What I could have done better:
-> I could have researched better to find and spend time only on the best tests online (I now say PMZilla, Rita fasttrack, Oliverlehmann and Headfirstpmp. Some parts of Pmstudy)
-> I should have chosen one of the below plans :
1. Quickl move ahead during the test. Mark for review those that you find tough to read and complete those that you find easy. Then comeback.
OR 2.Spend time solving each one with the best possible way and mark reviews very low to none.
I probably messed it up. Unknowingly I marked a lot for review even while spending adequate time. Just to be cautious. But that kept building pressure on me.
My Practice scores were:
PM Study 1 : 61% Very initial days
PM Study 2 : 72%
Rita Fasttrack : 83%
Heafirst : 85.5%
Oliverlehmann 75 : 80%
Oliverlehmann 175: 75.43%
PMZilla final : 65.5%
Hope this helps. Will keep this updated.

Hi
And thanks to you too for the test. I thought I was done with the tests and thats when (2 days before the test) I found your test. I took the test one day before my exam day. Scored 65% which did make me nervous but that really made me ready for the next seemingly similar (in complexity) actual test.
I would recomend everyone take the test. Atleast 2 weeks before their actual test. That may help in closing gaps better.
