Passed PMP Aug -19

I just passed the PMP exam on Aug - 19. Just a warning, my goal was to pass the PMP exam, and I tried to do the least number of hours to prepare for it. However, I do believe the knowledge you obtain from real studying is important and should be retained for future PM work.

What I used to prep:

  •  Rita Mulcahy's prep book (skimmed and did ~60% of practice questions)
  •  Head First book (read cover to cover and did all exercies)
  • 1500 Practice exam quesitons(found through other links on this forum)
  • PMP Precast (listened to 80% of it during my drive to work, zoned out a couple of times tho)
  • Kim Heldman's book (did practice exam questions)

I did not:

  • Read the PMBOK Guide (I may have read ~10 pages)
  • Did not memorize the ITTO (not enough questions on PMP exam to warrent memorization of this, a lot of it is common sense)

I scheduled the PMP exam once I found out that the test will change at the end of August. I gave myself 4 months of prep time. However, I am a huge procrastinator and didn't start studying until 2 weeks before I realize I can't reschedule it anymore.

I skimmed through Rita's book (kind of boring) and read every page of Head First prep book (highly recommended) I only did the practice tests from KIm Heldman's book. I find Heldman's questions were more difficult than the real exam. I think Head First's 200 questions were the most similar to the PMP test.

I was scoring around 50 to 60% on Kim's practice exams and ~ 60-70% on Rita's questions.

Day of the exam: since I was so unprepared for this exam, I thought for sure I was going to fail. I didn't even bother looking at my notes, I just hung out and watched Maurey. Once I got into the test center, I sat down and completed my first 10 questions, I was amazed at how easy the questions were compared to the practice questions I have taken! I breezed through the first pass of the 200 questions in 2 hours and I did a second pass, changed a couple of answers and submitted. I took frequent breaks to unwind and rest my eyes.

I was very nervous when I clicked the submit button, but then I saw the pass score I was sooo happy!!!  Now I can offically put the PMP as the suffix on my signature page.

I think the key is to have confidence in knowing what is the right way to do things and relax.

Good luck with your studies,

JW
