Passed Last Friday!! (02/18/11, Second try)
I'm still kind of in a numb shock, and waiting for my test results will forever be a very memorable moment (I thought my heart was about to burst from my chest!).
I inittially underestimated this test when I first took this test back in January and as a result did not pass. At first, all I used to study was question banks, PMBOK guide, and 7 years experience managing medium sized projects (< $1 million). I grossly underestimated tihs test and seriously thought I could never pass it just because of the seemingly pure ambiguity of the questions. All indicators said otherwise but I did not give up.
I researched what were the best books, and narrowed down the selection to three possibilities; Rita's book, the Head First book, and Andy Crowe's book. Rita's just looked more complete, but in hindsight I think the other two are more comprehensive, but I bought Rita's book plus the exam question application. I also read somewhere here that www.pmstudy.com was a good choice, so I signed up for their 4 exam package. I highly recommend both. I especially like Rita's methodology of really making you understand the nature of the topics and their relationship vs. just memorizing things. This proved to be effective in my case.
If you buy her book, really follow her guidance. If she tells u to read something over, do it! It means it's a xomplex subject and you need to know it inside and out. Always think in high level terms, meaning that the exam is going to test you at a sophisticated level of applying a particular tool or process to solve a problem, so really imagine yourself solving those high level problems (conflicts, schedules, risks, etc). This was my approach, plus dedication and focus, that helped me pass this second time. Thank you all and best of luck to you future PMP'ers.
