Passed Exam on 1st Attempt - July 8th
Hello All,
First I would like to thank everyone that posted content here. I found this to be a very valuable source of information during my preparation.
Study Time Invested
It took me about 4 months to prepare. For the first few months I only studied on the weekends, and for the last two I studied at during the week and at the office during lunch (had to close my door). The closer I got to exam day, the more heads down time I dedicated to review.
Books
Rita Mulcahy Exam Prep and PMBOK - I read each of these twice, I read them the second time around after I did the free PMStudy exam because I wanted to see where I stood after the first read. Reading these books the second time was much quicker. I also used the Rita Mulcahy Hot Topics Flash cards which were handy when I could not carry books around.
Simulation Exams
PM Fast Track (Rita Mulcahy) - I went through these questions about 50 at a time reviewing each one after I answered them. I liked how you could select questions from a particular KA or even search on a key word and it would let you answer all the questions on that topic. I focused on the SuperPMP questions which were the more difficult ones.
PMStudy - I first did the free one after reading PMBOK and Rita once. My first score was 68%. Needless today I had more work to do, but it pointed out my weakest areas. I read PMBOK and Rita again and then purchased the remaining exams. On these I scored 73%, 75%, and 78%. I did find that some of the questions seemed to reference very obscure sections of the PMBOK, but that just forced me to pay closer attention to my reading, which I consider to be a good thing. Keep in mind that if you purchase these exams, you still only have access to them for about 12 days.
Oliver Lehmann 75 Questions - I started to take this exam but found many of the questions did not have anything to do with what I was studying for. I did not want to go on a tangent and start studying topics that were not going to be on the exam. I just quit this one as I did not find it helpful for me after about 25 questions. Others have said it was valuable, but I found it distracting.
PMZilla 25 Tough Questions - I found these questions to be similar to what was on the exam (e.g. tricky verbiage etc.). Scored 85%. I took this after taking all of the PMStudy exams.
Memorizing ITTO's
I really debated on memorizing ITTO's. I read many of the comments here and some people did and some people didn't. I chose not to memorize them, and just learned how they all interacted with one another. This seemed to do the trick for me. I will say that there were quite a few questions on T&T's, but they were not direct questions. The questions described a scenario and you needed to determine what knowledge and process you were in, based on that you would need to select the appropriate tool and technique. The bottom line is you need to know the process flow and what T&T's are used when (memorize or not). I had very few questions that required me to reference a process inputs from my memory, mainly T&T's and outputs.
Brain Dump
During the 15 minute tutorial I only dumped the 42 processes in their respective KA's and also all of the formulas. I did not reference it much, but it made me feel better before I started the exam.
Exam
I found the exam to be tricky. Even though I knew the material well, there were still many questions that I really had to think through. I was usually able to eliminate two choices immediately, and then two were left that seemed to fit. At that point I needed to read the question more carefully, looking at past tense vs. present tense verbiage and other little details to choose the best answer. I took one break at question 125. Overall the exam took me about 3.5 hours and I spent the last 30 mins reviewing my marked questions. Again, I describe the test as tricky since it caused me to really question what I actually read in the PMBOK. You have to trust what you have learned in the PMBOK (and other study material) pick your answer and move on.
Passed with Proficient in Executing and Moderately Proficient in all others.
Good luck to everyone and don't forget that the exam changes after Aug. 31.
Cheers,
