Passed on 2nd Try 11-30-13 - Finally!!

With incredible relief, I passed on my 2nd try today.  Such a burden lifted.  I was in shock when I saw the Congratulations screen, I was so worried I might fail again.  I needed every minute of the 4 hours, no breaks.  One thing that really helped is to do the first pass and marking anything you are not 100% sure of (which seemed like a ton!), and then going back through again to review the Marked and Incomplete ones.  This technique really helped then catch things I'd missed the first time.   Sometimes just having a break from looking at the question helped me figure out the right answers the next time through.   Also, it was great to just know I could completely skip a question that seemed too strange or complicated and come back to it when I felt less panicky.

Lessons Learned:

What helped me most this time was the combination of the PM Prepcast, the PM Exam Simulator, the PM Prepcast Formula sheet and reading the PMBok.   The videos of the prepcast helped break up the reading and also I would listen to them on my iPod when I was cooking dinner or walking to work just to reinforce it.

A few weeks before  the exam, I did more quizzes on key areas where I had gaps--for me that was risk, cost, time, and scope.  The Exam Simulator is great for that, you can pick as much time as you have and do questions.  After I took the quizzes, I would review only the answers I got wrong, and then reread the PMBok on those gaps (the PM Prepcast notes which pages so it makes it easy to reference.).  I then took notes in a spreadsheet (tabbed for the Knowledge Area) to refer to later. I do find the 5th Edition of the PMBok so much better written than the previous - still not easy to read but much more understandable than the previous ones.

I did also review Rita's book a little (esp HR Mgmt, Risk, Quality) since I already had it.   And although everyone suggests relaxing the night before the exam, I still studied most of the day, and also reivewed the formulas again before I went to bed.    I got to the test center early and wrote out my formulas again in the car before I went in.

Thanks for all the support and advice from this forum, it has been invaluable.

Congratulations whiteav. I failed the exam the first time on Nov 1 2013. I am preparing for it again. My first time around, I went through Rita's guide and completed all practice questions but I bought the extra fast track software and completed all the questions from every chapter. I thought that was good enough. I tried to read the PMBOK, but it was challenging and boring to read, Rita explains it way more better plus it was fun doing the exercises, but I know that it is not enough. I scored an average of 70% for all the exams which I know is not good enough, plus I never read the PMBOK. This time around I am going to go through the PMBOK 3 times along with Rita and another guide: Achieve PMP success and complete as many free and paid exams there are out there.
