Finally Passed. important lessons learned
I finally passed my PMP after my second attempt. I do want to thank everyone for their encouragement and advice. It was nice to hear people giving positive reinforcement after what it felt like was earth crumbling down on me.
Few tips and lessons learned:
PMBOK.. read it at least once. There are some brave hearts here will tell you otherwise. Great, but you should read it. They say 50-60% of the question are from PMBOK, and if 61% is passing rate, you should know the PMBOK. Not inside out, just overall understanding.
case and point: I know I failed the first time because I didn't go through PMBOK. Rita is great, you should read it in parallel, not one for the other. There are those who feel they have to read one or the other. Nonsense.
BrainBok: $30 for 90 day access: Best online tool no but or if. This tool is the single reason why I passed. I do want to thank the poster deepfriedbrain for introducing me brainbok. It's simply amazing. The flashcards, the quizes, and ITTO tools. Absolutely a must. This is an investment you can take it to the bank
Use different vendors for exam simulators. Don't buy 4 exams from one vendor. You'll find your passing the exam and getting high score simply because you memorized the exams, not because you understand the question. That defeats the purpose.
I used test number 3 and 4 from PM Study and Test 2 and 4 from Simply Learn. PM study is very close to the exam. try to spred them out, do one from simply learn one day, next day PMstudy and next day simply learn. So your continously mixing and matching. That way you don't get into a pattern.
Mental notes:
Relax. I know some people prefer the exam in the morning. I took it in the afternoon. It gave me plenty of time to rest, infact, I went to the gym before the exam, used the sauna, showerd, had a descent lunch, then went to war.
I took breaks after 70 questions. I had some choclates in the locker and some water. I also drank some coke just to keep the sugar and energy level high. I did some stretching, which helped me with the blood flow.
Went to washrooms, washed my face. For 2-5 mins, take your mind completely off the exam, I was reading a newspaper and the receptionist was looking at me weird. but I knew I needed a quick mental break. it worked for me. Will it work for you, maybe maybe not.
All the best

I was the first fellow in other post to tell you to read PMBOK.
And happy to hear that you are a PMP now. Good Job.
