How should I prepare for PMP?

 Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and PMP and would appreciate some help.

Should I first read Ritas's book + PMBOK before I register myself for a course to get my 35 PUDs?

Thx in advance,

B

Do not hurry for this exam as its a very costly exam. keep about 3 months of target for the same. Get 35 hours PDU from some good REP first and try for classroom based session. Start reading PMP reference books first like Rita, HeadFirst, Andy etc and then move to PMBOK. Practice lots of mock tests, some free one are - Pmstudy (excellent), Pmpforsure (excellent), Kim Heldman, Christopher Scordo, Exam Central, TechFAQ360, bestsamplequestions, Oliver's, PMZilla, Head First's etc.

Once you secure 70% or more in good mock test, go with confidence and give the exam.

I suggest my clients to break the PMP preparation in 3 phases, with properly following the definition of phase, mean we do need to have clear phase end criteria defined. It’s a broad plan and it does need adaption with time.

Phase 1:

Goal : Get familiarity with PMBOK contents  ( does not necessary mean reading PMBOK)

Phase End Criteria: one has to define based on what material he/she has like for my students I say that you should get at least 60% in lesson end quizzes. So define the acceptance criteria which is good enough to get the goal met

Activities:

This part is highly depended on what is available with learner and what all he finds comfortable with , possible activities can help in meeting this goal is

1.       Watching video content of PMBOK5

2.       Reading prep books like Headfirst / Rita / Andy

3.       Reading PMBOK without worrying about the interdependencies

Phase 2:

Goal : Get into details of each Knowledge Area

Phase End Criteria:  You start scoring 85% + in each knowledge area quizzes , and you try at least 60 questions per knowledge area before you move to next.

Activities:

As before this part is highly depended on what is available with learner and what all he finds comfortable with, possible activities can help in meeting this goal is

1.       Watching video content of PMBOK5 and taking knowledge area quizzes

2.       Reading PMBOK with more focus, ensure you understand each and every details of it

3.       Reading prep books like Headfirst / Rita / Andy with more focus.

Phase 3:

Goal : Develop Endurance and feel comfortable with mixing of knowledge areas

Phase End Criteria:  You start scoring 80% + in good simulation exams. This part is very tricky since many exams are meant to confuse you and delay your certification.

Activities:

Pick some reliable and good resource of question bank, practice 3 to 4 full length or 600 to 800 questions , the number is important but more important is what you learn from one test, I find many doing test just to feel that they are done with these many tests.
