Starting my prepartion

Hello All,

I have recently started to prepare for PMP. Yesterday submitted my application form for the exam and I suppose PMI will review and revert on my application.

I have been reading this forum and there are some question which are coming to my mind out of curiousity

I registered to PMI membership and as a benefit of being a member I got a copy of PMBOK 5, it has over 500 pages and I assuming Rita's book(which I plan to buy) will have similar number of pages, so my question is if I have to prepare for my exams do i have to read over 1000 pages of material? Considering my work schedule it will take me a year to complete this and I strongly believe that I should schedule the exam in 2-3 months time frame.

Did all of you study these books thoroughly?? I am 30% through reading e-learning material which my company has provided to complete 35 PDU's.

My question might sound stupid and let me be clear i am not trying to refrain from studying just curious to know did most of you study such huge quantity of material?

Manas,

There's no single formula to crack the PMP.

There're folks who claim to have passed the exam w/o ever going through a single page of either the PMBOK or Rita's. And then there are others (like me) who would swear by these two books. I always attribute my 5Ps score to the fact that I read through these books at least 2-3 times over a period of 60 - 70 days. So it's very much 'do able'. The tougher question we need to answer is, which model would suit YOU?

You can perhaps do this - take a wild shot and make up your mind on whether to read through these books or not. Go through the reading material (whichever you're using) and then take a few mocks to gauge your level of prep. Your scores would indicate whether you'd need to do a mid-course correction and focus more on these two texts. That's probably the best way to find out what's going to be your formula for success.

All the best!

Thanks Diba.. really appreciate your response and wonderful insight. The problem with me since my childhood is that I cannot read a lot of study materials/books, the moment I understand the logic I tend to move on. Another big issue is my memory is worst when it comes to study related things :-), jokes apart, I do get your point and I am sure it is doable for me to at least read these 2 books once.

Based on the first 5-6 chapters(completed till WBS) which I have read so far I tried and gave the 30 Questions test right here on PMZilla and I got 18 answers right out of the 30, tried not to guess any of those answers. What do you think about this score as a starting point? I would say its low in terms of percentage considering these were only 30 questions.

Regards,

Manas

Diba is right, there is no single formula for PMP, just dont worrry about the time spent, ensure that you are getting the concepts and are able to answer mock qustions,

Thanks for the advice. Appreciate it.
