My PMP journey experience

Dear PMP Aspirants,

I would like to share my experience on my PMP exam which was scheduled yesterday, 16th July 2013.

Reference Books: I read Rita's 6th edition book 2 times and solved all practice questions. I also had Andy Crowe book. This book is useful for easy understanding, though I haven't referred this book in my last 6 weeks preparation. And the last and most important one is PMBOK-4. Understanding the concepts one can refer any book, but for exam point view this book alone is sufficient. For first time user, it’s hard to grasp especially English language, but subsequent reading, it makes easier to understand. I read this book thoroughly once and then referred in details during mock up exams.

Sample questions and mock test: There are plenty of online free sample questions available today, which are also provided on this website. But the most important questions which I found very useful are Oliver 175+75 questions and PMPForSure 100 questions. For mock up paid test I found PMPForSure questions very useful. I could solve all their questions in 100 and 200 batches. My score started from 66% and gradually went up to 78% in these exams. Before the day of the exam I tried one paid test of Pmstudy and I could score 75%. Though PMstudy questions are better match with actual questions but PMPForSure questions gave me more confidence. One good thing about PMPForSure that questions are solely based on PMBoK.

PMP Exam: I found PMP questions are easier than what I could perceive from online forums. If you have a good grasp on ITTO, you can easily solve 40-50% questions. Understanding of ITTO is more important than mugging it up. Questions on EVM are easy. PMP exam questions are more to test your brain and patience. That’s why mock tests are crucial for preparations. My advice to you based on my preparation to try mock tests with 200 questions just before 3-4 days of exam. As many questions you will solve, you will be better prepared for exam. On exam day, be calm and belief in you. PMP exam is not very tough to crack.

One last thing, don't put too much stress on yourself.  Even if one has not cleared the exam, it is not going to end. Life will remain the same.

What I said above is my experience. You don’t necessary have to change your style. We all are professional and have gathered enough experience around us.

I cleared PMP exam with 2P's and 3 MP's on my first attempt.

I completely agree with your lessons learned and approach. This forum tends to have the opinion that the exam is extremely difficult. It's not terrible. If you read through the material, study ITTO a bit, and do a few mock exams, you should be good to go.

THe difficulty level wil depend on how experienced you are as a PM , I know people who have cleared in 1 week flat without taking any mock tests, and people reading for years and still not clearing in first attempt. Due to this wide spectrum its important that people state how many years experience they have as PM and managing large projects. Then people with similar experience level can extrapolate the level of difficultly.
