Lessons Learned from 1st time pass of PMP
First of all, thank you to this forum and community. I have found the content very useful during my journey to become a PMP.
Today, I passed the PMP and wanted to share with the community my lessons learned.
My study approach:
First, to qualify for hours, attended Simplilearn's e-learning on demand courses. This way, I went ahead & got 35 hours so I could get my application in.
Read Andy Crowe's book 3 times. Read and re-read questions.
Attended Velociteach's 3 day exam prep seminar. More questions.
Reviewed / Viewed Velociteach's InSite e-learning on demand courses at least twice each.
Took several sample test provided by Velociteach's InSite.
Read PMBOK once very detailed; then another time to skim through
Took Oliver Lehman's free 75 question test. Scored 70%. Read explanations.
Read McGraw Hill's PMP Certification Mathematics book and worked through problems.
Unlike others, I did not read Rita's book. I am more of a visual learner, so, I decided to go with Andy Crowe's book. I think both are good, though. And, so many people mention Rita's book, so, I'm sure it just boils down to personal preference. By the way, you can rent Rita's book on Amazon to save money.
Overall, I invested just about every weekend studying across 5 months. I have a 8 year old daughter and a full time job during the day, so, it was difficult to study during the weekdays. It takes a lot of discipline, planning and self-determination to pass.
I did not memorize the ITTO; this was purposeful because I know I didn't have the bandwidth. Rather, I sought to really understand and apply the processes. What comes first, next, last, etc; It all fell into place logically for me. I have read many posts saying how important it is to memorize it. In my experience, it was more important to be able to understand the foundation and then apply.
Thinking back, I should have practiced more math problems from the McGraw Hill book mentioned above. There were several EVM problems. The moment I got into the test site, I did do a dump of all the math formulas onto my scratch paper. That really helped. Don't underestimate how important it is to know these formulas by heart.
I hope this helps inform your journey.
Good luck in your future endeavors. It was really worth the time and effort.
Best wishes, Beth in Atlanta, USA.
