HR Management Questions

A project organizational chart shows resources and:

1. WBS work packages

2. Activity resource estimates

3. Responsibilities

4. Schedule.

Two team members are having a disagreement about how to accomplish an activity. The project is low risk and is taking place in a strong matrix environment with 34 team members. To resolve the dispute the project manager should

1. Make the decision

2. Send the team members to their managers for advise on resolving the dispute

3. Ask for a benchmark analysis

4. Have the team members compromise.

Appreciate inputs.

Thanks,

Riyaz

3 -- few chart have responsibilities along with resources

1 --- strong matrix - pm can make dicisions as staff with full time reporting is with him.

compromise may be a part of dicision or way of making decision or requirement of particular case, but all can be consider as a make decisions.

like ask for for analyse benchmark is also a part of making decisions.

For Question 1 can't the option 1 "WBS work packages" be an answer. While looking at Page 220 of PMBOK 4th edition the description says "... is arranged according to an organization's existing department, .... project activities or work packages listed under each department..

For the second Question Rita's answer is Answer 2, which explains that for technical matters the staff have to be sent to their respective functional managers which is arguable..

Q1

p220 - is describing regarding OBS not for wbs.  read last line of this page too.

Q 2

I first follow pmbok, then other.

pmbok say pm should be decision maker, problem solving.

as per organisational structure, in strong matrix staff reports 100% (full time) to pm.

after all any action will belong under/as per  pm decision.

hi riyaz145

what is the correct ans for 2nd question?

Sunita,

for the second question is Option 2..

and that's the dispute for which I had posted this Q...

Regards,

This is really weird, because i thought in strong matrix organization. PM has full power to take decisions.

Q1: answer 3

Q2:answer 1

Q2:

For a low risk activity, and

under a strong matrix setup,

I think the PM should be able to take a decision.on 2 members arguing over what to do.

If project managers takes a decision, that means the conflict resolution method used here is forcing which according to PM guide is not a good option.

Morever the dispute is about how to finish an activity, although the PM would like to solve it, in most of the scenarios he might not have the technical expertise to solve technical matters.

But if the dispute is not technical I think the PM can take the decision after listening to the team members.

So i guess Rita is right

Regarding second question 1 or 3 can be right answer, i know most of you are inclined toward 1 but how about 3. Before PM makes a decision shouldn't he ask for Benchmark Analysis.

According to me option 4 should be the last resort for the PM.
