How to use First 15 Mins before Exam

Hello Everyone,

Please advise how to use first 15 mins before the start. What all info is really usefull for peparing the BrainDump.

thanks!

Nice topic Antony!

Always wanted to know more about this. Would be great if the experienced pros can share their thoughts on:

i) How many scratch papers / pages are provided? This would be pretty important since I think I heard it somewhere that they take away used pages when providing new ones.(And obviously you wouldn't want to trade your brain dump in the middle of an exam because you need more rough space for actual rough work!).

ii) How long / significant is the tutorial which you're supposed to complete during those 15 min? Can we skip it completely or what's the min amount of time one has to spend on the tutorial? Bottomline is, how much effective time does one get for preparing the brain dump?

Thanks in advance for responses.

 1. Dump forumula and process map. Can also dump some graphs(like S curve), can dump some Gurus nams like Quality, or HR if time left. Also dump important terms which u think is important but forget. Ex. QFD, of course if time is left. Would n't suggest go over 15 minutes and use one of the minutes from 4 hours from the test.

They provide four sheets of paper and pencil. You can take more if you would like but I guess won't be able to fill more than two pages in 15 minutes.

I think one benefit of dumping is that you can calm your nerve by recalling some of the stuff on the paper and be ready for the exam. Several PMP has said they hardly look at these notes during the exam but I would still recommend practice dumping because it helps you find gaps and prepare.

2. You can completely skip tutorial, or you can google and read today from some site.

Hope this helps.

PMNovice has already answered most of the part, with experience of being in touch with over 600 PMP students I would not suggest you write any BrainDump on paper before starting the exam. The paper is meant for calculations, making some mindmap diagrams and in case you want to note down anything you need to remember later. This is the motive why PMI provides you papers.

Some people might have used BrainDump writing on paper before the exam and they might have passed PMP, but in reality, I know more people who have failed PMP because of this technique. Psychologically, before you begin PMP exam, there is always a stress and it could lead to writing wrong information on paper. If you write something wrong on paper and keep using it, you are likely to use wrong information in all 200 questions. This results in sure failure.

PMP exam questions are not framed that directly that writing dumps would help. The question situation understanding is the main trick of PMP exam. If you understand the questions, apply common sense, use PM knowledge you have acquired, you are more likely to choose right answers and in lesser time.

Again what I am saying is based upon the observation of over 600 students, it’s your choice. If you think writing dumps on paper would help, go ahead.

One thing surely you can do is to put the things you find difficult to remember on the sheet of paper, like forumulas, any ITTO etc. This will help you become calm as you are not worried about remembering things. If the question comes you can refer to the sheet.

For situational questions you will rarely need the sheet.

Other thing I did was kept track of the number of questions I was not sure of.  Before my review I realized that that around 30% questions I was not sure of. This eased of the pressure while going through the answers again, since if I am sure of 70% answers I am already through.

Thanks Admin for the great idea about marking the doubtful question. So did you write the question number for unsure questions on the paper ?

I concur with Admin, I put question numbers market for review at the bottom of the sheet. In my opinon postpone the decision what to dump on scrap paper till 2 days before the exam. During preparation I thought of putting many things in first 15 min but in actual hardly put 2 formulae for EVM and acronyms for 2 ITTO's.

The prep style for every individual is different and so I feel there is no standard answer to this question.Everyone might have his/her own cheat sheet prepared during the study. As you progress with the mock exams and revisions, one can easily envisage what are difficuilt areas to memorize or feel less confident about, add those in cheat sheet. Revisit the cheat sheet few times in a day and then you may find that there is/are hardly few things (or nothing) to dump on scratch paper. Make full use of the scratch paper to draw neat and clean network diagram or steps/formulae to solve numericals (usually its quick and doesnt take long), incase if you are lucky it could happen that multiple questions share same data elements and formulae, thus you can ride on the work done while solving previous questions.

Verdict-  By dumping the info on a piece of paper given to you going to make you feel confident and relaxed , go ahead and do it.

How you have used 15 minutes. And what was LL

  • Write the PMBOK page 43  chart

  • Write the FORMULAS

  • Process mind maps if you have anything. For Exmple (Deliverables ---> Validated Deliverables------> Accepted Deliverables)

These 3s are most important point  which most of the people do before start the exam. and ultimately

  • Re-gain your CONFIDENT.
