Hi everybody, Below are the main differences between Overlapping & Iterative phases. Kindly let me know if there exists any doubt or query regarding the same. Also if something else needs to be added do let me know.
| Overlapping | Iterative |
| 1. Here the main phase as well as the subsequent phase being overlapped are pre planned ( schedule comperssion technique: FastTracking ) | 1. Here the main phase is planned but the subsequent phase being iterated is not pre planned or it is planned as work progresses ( research based projects ) |
| 2. More Riskier because there are high chances of rework since the long term planning does not have the accurate information of the completed previous phase required for the subsequent phase. | 2. Less Riskier because its more of a “just in time approach” since the planning of the subsequent phase is done while the main phase is executing hence better accurate information is available. |
| 3. It is encountered mostly where one team works on the main phase & the other team works on the subsequent phase. | 3. It is encountered mostly where the team members of the same team work on the main phase as well as the subsequent phase. For example the developers are working on the Executing and Closing process of the main phase & the designers of the same team are working on the Initiating and Planning processes of the subsequent phase. |
