About 'Resource Calender' as a input to 'Estimate Activity Duration'
Submitted by Vijay_PMP on Mon, 09/01/2014 - 10:27
Hi,
In PMBOK, 5th edition, Page#143, Project management Overview, it is shown that, 'Resource calender' is an input to 'estimate activity duration'. I haven't seen this as an output for any of the processes which occur prior to 'estimate activity duration' like 'estimate activity resources','sequence activities' etc.
Can a particular task or a process can become input to a certain process, even though it is not an output of any other related process?
Please help me in understanding this.
Thanks,

Why Not ?
Why Not ?
Resource calendar is required for scheduling. It may not be prepared as part of any project management process. Unless you know the resource availability you will not be able to develop fool proof schedule.

You are right in a way that
You are right in a way that resource calendar is not yet prepared if you look at the sequence, but you are missing one thing. These processes are performed iteratively, multiple times in a project. And it is not necessary to follow the sequence of the process as given in PMBOK .
Resource Calendar comes from
• Acquire Project Team
• Conduct Procurements
The Acquire Project team has a pre assignment as tool and technique, which mean we do have resource already assigned to the project in many cases or it also mean if not all some of the resources are pre assigned, so if that happen that comes in the beginning only.
Does this make sense? :-)

Thank You!
Agreed! Now its clear that, its not mandatory to have something in sequence when it comes to Inputs and Outputs from sequencing processes.Yup! Makes sense. Thanks a bunch for helping me out on this.
