Total Float & Free Float Question ?
Submitted by rjbuzzing on Fri, 01/25/2013 - 21:28
In a project, an activity on the critical path has been delayed by 5 days. when you revist the project schedule, you find that another activity with 5 days free float and third activity with 10 days total float. Assuming similar resources are required for all the activities in the project , what should be done?
a) Get additional resource to complete delayed activity
b) Use resource from activity which has 10 days of total free float
c) Use resource from activity which as 5 days of free float
d) use resource from both the activities

Answer
I think the answer is d.
Both the other activities can be delayed a lil without affecting the overall project duration. Since all three activities have similar needs, it is best to throw all the extra resources you can afford without affecting the cost baseline at the problem. This is best represented by d.

From where you got this
From where you got this question.
IMO
there are errors in question.
total free float could not be a term.
either freefloat or total float (float) is term . total free float is nothing.
if we consider it is free float then
project delayed by 5 days at which stretch of time ,if it is behind of 10 days free float , then you can use resources from 10 days activity for 5 days. thus you can gain only 2.5 days schedule compression only .
for accelerating more extra source is required.
if this project delay happened in a stretch of time ahead of 10 days free float then to accelerate critical path activity, fully new source is required.
thus to cover delayed time in all cases additional source is required. option A.
what is your explanation and answer.

Pawar, Maybe Total Free Float
Pawar,
Agree Total Free Float is wrong, let's assume it is Total Float and Free Float.(Corrected the Question) Thoughts ?

1 is surely a wrong answer.2.
1 is surely a wrong answer.
2. & 3 both can be used as both fulfills the required number of additional days.
4. I don't think this is an answer as it says use resources from both the activities, NOT ANY ONE ACTIVITY
So, i guess the answer is from 2 or 3 based on your understanding ?

It is interesting that we both have the same reasoning but picked different choices.
I agree it could be 2 or 3, and 4 basically includes both 2 or 3. Hence 4 (or d) is the correct answer. There isn't enough information in the question to conclude positively that additonal resources are needed.

Little think on this point-
Little think on this point- 5 days have been passed for all activities, it means 5 day ff has been vanished.
and to get project to finish in scheduled date- you require of critical activity to finish 6 days effort in one day.
This complicacy does not indicate that you will get project done in scheduled date by FF resources.
