PMP mock exams, products - proliferation

As a dedicated PMP aspirant , I have experienced proliferation of websites/ registered providers to help PMP exam aspirants.

The moment PMP exam preparation is typed in internet, the information explotion results.

It is obvious that  a PMP aspirant is  responsible to pick the right information and devise a plan and engage in PMZilla forums with other professionals to carve out a sucessful approach to pass the exam.

But isn't it time PMI step into to monitor the quality or introduce quality measures to rate the performance of the registered providers? Or should there be a separate organization ( not for profit) to launch this quality measures?

Each mock exam by registered providers are in the range of $12 to $15 and training boot camps range from $200 - $500. English as a language is used so differently in framing the questions Some offere guarnettes and some say they would and simply don't.

I cannot find any other way to raise this as a concern but in PMZilla forum. Am i perceiving the abundance of information and the poor quality of the mock exams wrongly?

Your concern is valid - When we did PMP back in 2007, there were very few vendors but still it was quite an overload of information. After 8 years, now things have become worse and it will continue to be worse. Few reasons are :

  • PMP is  not an easy exam and anyone starting for preparation needs help and support outside PMBoK.
  • Everyone who completes PMP certification has spent considerable hours and even 1% of those people decide to sell their knowledge the proliferation will continue.
  • Most newer stuff is just recycled and repackaged stuff playing on the fear of aspirants.

PMI will not be able to control since they are also in the business .. each REP gets them money and helps them spread the word about PMI certifications.  Certification fees are also source of revenue.

Solution

  • Find trusted sources of information and spend some time to research on which are good books, mock tests etc. PMZilla LL forums is one such place.
  • Try not to get attracted to any new material or marketing campaign. Just keep your focus on the materials you already have, unless you find yourself in weak spot, there is no need to invest in many different materials.
  • Check out free materials on PMZilla  and go for paid ones only if there is a need, read reviews before you buy
