PM to Program Manager

Would like to know what does it take to get into the program management department after doing PM'ing for a while? Have any of you aspired to move up to the next level? What's the natural route most PM's take?

When you deliver a project successfully, you are naturally eligible to take higher responsibility and deliver larger projects. The more the $ value of the project the more the value you have as a PM and I would consider this as a natural progression in your career.

Programs will have many more stakeholders and you could have PMs reporting to you , so in that sense being Program manager can be considered as next level.

However dont try to be something try to deliver the projects, belive me there are very few good project managers, who can proactively identify risks / issues and ensure the project is on track.
